What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer - Healthcare position at HED?

Our Mechanical Engineering team is looking to add an experienced team member to our group of talented engineers. The person filling this position will be r esponsible for the design and technical systems for large, complex projects from schematics through construction administration. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in the design and construction of Healthcare facilities, with knowledge of California building codes, OSHPD/HCAI requirements, and energy efficiency standards.

This role also involves collaborating with architects, project managers, and contractors to design, specify, and deliver reliable mechanical systems that meet the unique needs of Healthcare environments.

Typical Duties - Project Related

  • Attend site walk for existing condition verification.
  • Perform load calculations or review the load calculation results (perform by other engineers) to determine system selection and sizing.
  • Lead building system concepts and documentation process across all project phases (schematics through construction administration) for healthcare projects, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialized care facilities.
  • Function as Discipline Team Leader on large, complex projects when assigned.
  • Direct and oversee discipline-specific project team members.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to quality assurance processes
  • Prepare and monitor project status reports.
  • Conduct and document required code research (including Title 24, CBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, and HCAI/OSHPD).
  • Contribute to project cost model development and design to budget.
  • Develop and maintain a Mechanical Basis of Design Journal throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform material and product research.
  • Attend and represent discipline in project meetings.
  • Coordinate and interface with other discipline leaders.
  • Provide timely responses to client questions/requests.
  • Provide technical oversight during construction administration, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and conducting site visits.
  • Ensure quality of engineering services within an integrated project team concept.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
  • Support sustainable design initiatives, energy modeling, and LEED certification efforts where applicable.

Typical Duties - Non-Project Related

  • Mentor and coach support engineers for increased project responsibility.
  • Provide performance feedback to supervisors on support engineers.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for quality and service improvements.
  • Participate in in-house training activities and professional development.
  • Engage in relevant professional organizations and industry activities.
  • Recognize and encourage team members demonstrating excellence beyond expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and California P.E. licensure required.
  • Minimum 10 years of A/E industry experience (healthcare focus preferred).
  • Strong background with HCAI/OSHPD compliance (required for California projects).
  • LEED Accredited Professional (preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of design services from schematic design through close-out, with advanced technical expertise.
  • Strong understanding of multidisciplinary coordination requirements.
  • Proficiency in Revit and CADD software required.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to mentor staff, delegate effectively, and lead project teams.
  • Highly detail-oriented, motivated, flexible, and able to thrive under deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of occasionally traveling to and from project sites to attend client, project and construction meetings.
  • Ability to access existing and new project sites for observation, investigation and evaluation purposes.
  • Ability to use equipment for communication and documentation purposes.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.

Salary : $140,000 - $170,000
