Position Overview

HECO is seeking an Electric Motor Winder/Mechanic to join our team in Lexington, KY. This is a hands-on role focused on repairing, rebuilding, and rewinding AC/DC motors and associated rotating equipment. Prior experience is preferred, but we are open to training mechanically inclined candidates who are eager to learn winding and electrical testing.

Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical & General Repair

  • Diagnose, disassemble, repair, and reassemble electric motors and rotating equipment.
  • Complete mechanical rebuilds on motors, pumps, gearboxes, and fans.
  • Use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and vibration meters.
  • Participate in daily workflow discussions and job planning meetings.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.

Electrical Testing & Diagnostics

(Experience Preferred - Training Provided For The Right Candidate)

  • Perform electrical tests using multimeters, meggers, and Baker test equipment.
  • Measure winding and heater resistance, RTDs, and mechanical fits/clearances.
  • Document electrical testing results throughout the repair process.

Motor Winding Responsibilities

(Experience Preferred - Willing To Train Motivated Individuals)

  • Record precise measurements before disassembly.
  • Inspect motors and components for winding failures or damage.
  • Safely strip and remove windings without damaging cores.
  • Rewind:
    • Random and form-wound 3-phase AC motors
    • DC fields
    • Armatures
    • Wound rotors
  • Apply proper insulating materials and techniques.
  • Braze electrical connections.
  • Operate varnish systems, VPI equipment, burn-off and bake-out ovens, and media blasting machines.
Qualifications

  • 5 years of AC/DC motor repair experience preferred (willing to train candidates with strong mechanical aptitude).
  • 2 years of lead or coordination experience is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting ability; electrical troubleshooting a plus.
  • Ability to repair motors, pumps, fans, and gearboxes.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to quality.
  • Good communication skills and a team-oriented attitude.
  • Willingness to work overtime or weekends when required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, or sit for extended periods.
