Position Summary

This is a split position where the incumbent will report to the H&S Manager for part of the year and the site exploration supervisor during the summer exploration (May - September) season. The incumbent plans, directs, and implements safety programs in the assigned operational areas to promote a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment by performing the duties listed below.

Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities And Accountabilities

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Act on the authority of the Site General Manager in matters pertaining to safety and health that require resolution
  • Helping drive safety improvement by promoting a proactive safety culture
  • Ensuring a field presence at sites on a routine basis
  • Maintain the Safety and Health Management database for incidents, investigations, hazards, near misses, action items from risk reviews, training and competency requirements
  • Assist in the management, notification, investigation and reporting of incidents and hazards as required
  • Facilitate and participate in risk assessment and root cause analysis
  • Lead by example, modelling the behavior expected from all employees toward performing work in a safe manner
  • Actively promote safety and health objectives to all levels of the organization
  • Develop, assist in the implementation of and review procedures routinely or as circumstances change

Departmental Responsibilities - Site

  • Works with Managers, front line leaders and employees to establish workable solutions to existing safety and health problems in the work environment.
  • Implement and review safety & health policies and procedures in compliance with Greens Creek and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Provide training to supervisors and employees in site safety & health practices.
  • Inspect work areas to detect existing or potential safety and health hazards, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
  • Conduct investigation of accidents, incidents and injuries and assist supervisors and employees in establishing root cause and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
  • Conducts MSHA training, including 40-hour Newly Employed Inexperienced Miner, Experienced Miner, Annual Refresher Training, and Site-Specific Hazard Awareness Training.
  • Assists with or conducts health and industrial hygiene surveys/sampling to verify compliance with health regulations and determine safe limits of exposure to potentially harmful materials or conditions such as temperatures, noise, dust, fumes, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, and radiation, and implements or recommends control measures to minimize/eliminate exposures.
  • Facilitate MSHA representatives while they are on site conducting compliance or other duties.
  • Assist department staff in preparing, submitting, and analyzing safety and training documents.
  • Analyze safety and training data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

Departmental Responsibilities - Exploration

  • Develop and enforce safety policies and procedures specific to helicopter-supported remote exploration, and drilling activities.
  • Fly in helicopters and assist with field mobilization/demobilization.
  • Conduct field-level risk assessments and inspections related to helicopter landing zones, drill rigs, drill pads, and core logging facilities.
  • Coordinate with helicopter providers to ensure aviation safety protocols are in place, including morning line outs, manifest tracking, and load security.
  • Deliver safety orientations and site-specific training to all field personnel, including helicopter protocols, wildlife awareness, PPE, and emergency response plans.
  • Hike and perform safety duties in rugged environments while carrying equipment or emergency supplies.
  • Monitor field crew activities to ensure safe practices during rig mobilization, helicopter crew changes, sling operations, field mapping, geophysical data collection and core logging.
  • Serve as the on-site lead for incident response for the surface exploration team including leading first aid support, emergency communications, and incident reporting.
  • Conduct and lead toolbox talks, safety meetings, and post-incident reviews.
  • Assist in the development and testing of site-specific Emergency Response Plans (ERPs).

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety, or a related scientific or technical field, or equivalent combination of education and 3 to 5 years of safety related experience
  • Working knowledge of drilling, remote logistics, and exploration field work
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (MSHA, OSHA
  • MSHA instructor certification preferred

Must provide or be willing to obtain documentation of completed 40-hour MSHA training

Ability to obtain ATF Possessor's Clearance

Preferred: Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook

for 30 seconds.

Repetitive Squatting: Repeat squats x 3 reps.

  • Must wear hearing protection while working in noisy areas

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees may be frequently exposed to; outside weather conditions, uneven terrain, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives, vibration, and high noise levels.
