What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineering Intern position at Heaviside Industries?
ABOUT HEAVISIDE INDUSTRIES
Heaviside Industries builds multi-domain autonomous precision munitions for U.S. and allied special operations and conventional forces. While modern warfare has rapidly evolved with the proliferation of unmanned systems, hyper-precise munitions in contested environments are the future of the battlefield. Economical precision strike capabilities are critical to U.S. and allied war efforts, enabling successful defeat of enemy military assets and infrastructure. Heaviside builds precision munitions designed to operate in GPS-denied and spectrum-jammed battlefields—where traditional systems degrade or fail—without inflated prices or sacrifice to performance. All engineering and manufacturing is conducted in-house in Heaviside's Los Angeles, CA headquarters and Oslo, Norway office. Heaviside is backed by Interlagos, Menlo Ventures, Flume Ventures, Cantos, Anorak Ventures, and Ravelin Ventures.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will support R&D under the direction of our mechanical engineers, assisting across their full scope of work — from concept through qualified hardware.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist engineers with the mechanical design of structures and mechanisms — from concept through qualified hardware
- Design parts according to a system of constraints defined by our engineers — packaging and load paths at required loads, vibration, and shock
- Help with trade studies on materials, sealing and joining methods, and manufacturing processes (injection molding, CNC, additive, sheet metal, composites)
- Support structural analysis (hand calcs and FEA) under engineer direction
- Help with the print-to-part feedback loop with our in-house and external machine shops as designs iterate
- Support environmental and structural test campaigns: static load, vibe, shock, thermal, HALT/HASS
- Support test — fixturing, instrumentation, post-test teardown — and help turn the data into design changes
QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- Experience in an immersive technical project (collegiate project teams or professional setting)
- CAD proficiency (NX, SolidWorks, or similar); exposure to GD&T-driven drawing packages a plus
- Coursework or project experience in statics, dynamics, and vibrations; FEA exposure a plus
- Exposure to machining, sheet metal, injection molding, 3D printing, or composite fabrication
- U.S. Person as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.62)
