What are the responsibilities and job description for the Apprentice – Finish Department (Custom Woodwork) position at Heartwood Custom Woodworks?
Company Overview
Heartwood Custom Woodworks is an end-to-end custom cabinetry and millwork shop based in Eagle, Colorado. We're privileged to put our work in some of the finest homes in Vail, Aspen, and the surrounding areas.
Position Overview
We are looking for an entry-level Apprentice to join our Finish Department and learn the craft of high-end wood finishing from the ground up. This is not just a production role—it’s a hands-on apprenticeship where you’ll be trained in the full finishing process, from raw wood to final topcoat. You’ll work alongside experienced finishers who take pride in their work and are committed to passing on their knowledge. We’re looking for someone who shows up ready to learn, takes direction well, wants to be part of a collaborative team, and cares about doing things the right way—not the fast way.
How We Work
Our finish department is process-driven and quality-focused. Every piece that comes through has already been built to a high standard within our shop and by our builders—the job of the finish room is to elevate it. You’ll be exposed to the full workflow: prep → stain → seal → scuff → topcoat → final touch-up. We handle both batch work and one-off custom pieces, where consistency and detail matter. We believe in teaching the “why” behind each step, not just the task. Our clients insist on high quality and standards and that's what we will teach and expect.
