Position Summary:
The Roller Operator is responsible for safely operating the asphalt roller machine, ensuring smooth and efficient placement of asphalt on various paving projects. This position requires strong technical knowledge of paving equipment, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work as part of a team to complete projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate Roller Equipment: Compacting the asphalt to the required density, ensuring proper linear and transition joints, and smoothing out any imperfections left by the screed
- Set up and Adjust Equipment: Ensure the roller is properly set up before work begins and make adjustments during the job to ensure optimal paving results.
- Monitor Paving Process: Understanding compaction techniques, operating the roller safely and efficiently, and identifying and correcting imperfections in the asphalt surface.
- Collaborate with Crew: Work alongside laborers, truck drivers, and other operators to ensure materials are delivered and placed according to project specifications.
- Ensure Quality Control: Verify the quality of the asphalt being laid and ensure it meets industry standards and project requirements.
- Safety and Maintenance: Adhere to safety guidelines, ensuring all equipment is in good working order. Conduct pre-operation inspections, and perform basic maintenance tasks to keep the equipment functional and safe.
- Problem-Solving: Troubleshoot and address equipment malfunctions, adjusting the roller or stopping work to prevent damage to the project or equipment.
- Report Progress: Keep track of project progress and report any delays or issues to the Foreman or Supervisor promptly.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a roller operator or similar role in the construction or paving industry.
- Strong knowledge of asphalt paving techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Ability to operate paving machinery effectively and safely.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain high-quality standards.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy materials, tools, and equipment as required.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in outdoor conditions for extended periods.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor construction sites with exposure to noise, dust, and inclement weather.
- Full-time hours with occasional overtime based on project deadlines.
