Position Summary

The Northern Cheyenne Agency, Bureau of Indian Affairs, will receive dedicated, on-site Social Worker support that strengthens Child Welfare, Child Protection Services, Adult Protection Services, Individual Indian Monies (IIM) Case Management, and related case management programs under the Native American Child Safety Act.

This single Key Personnel position ensures timely, culturally responsive interventions that protect vulnerable children and adults, maintain family stability where possible, and deliver measurable improvements in safety, compliance, and service outcomes for the community served by the Agency.

Work Location

On-site at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Rocky Mountain Regional Office, Northern Cheyenne Agency 504 North Cheyenne Avenue, Lame Deer, Montana 59043

Additional Requirements: Rotating after-hours, overnight, weekend, and holiday on-call/emergency duty as required to support urgent child safety and protection needs.

Reporting Relationship

Reports directly to the Agency Technical Supervisor (Supervisory Social Worker) or designee identified at award.

Key Qualifications (Minimum & Preferred)

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a closely related field (Master's degree in Social Work strongly preferred)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a completed and adjudicated background check verifying no criminal or child abuse history that would pose a risk of harm to the community (per Native American Child Safety Act requirements)
  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record for the previous three years
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote tribal community setting while maintaining strict confidentiality and compliance with all Federal, tribal, and Agency records and privacy requirements
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of child welfare, adult protection, case management, court processes, and working with Native American populations is highly desirable

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Social Worker will:

  • Collaborate with the Agency Technical Supervisor to make timely, professional decisions on service delivery for referrals involving child endangerment and child protection.
  • Conduct thorough interviews, assessments, home visits, and collateral contacts with children and adults of all ages to ensure child safety and family stability.
  • Complete all required documentation (Application for Financial Assistance and Social Services, Release of Confidentiality, Placement Contracts, Vouchers, Placement Letters, etc.) accurately and on time.
  • Identify and mitigate current or impending danger to children through effective safety interventions, including possible removal when necessary; notify parents/guardians and supervisor immediately and complete all placement and court documentation within required timeframes (e.g., affidavits and petitions filed in tribal court within 72 hours).
  • Coordinate transportation, medical screenings, kinship/relative placements (including required background checks for all household members aged 18 ), and court testimony as needed.
  • Serve as a key liaison with law enforcement, tribal court staff, shelter providers, and other human service agencies to meet client needs efficiently.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive case plans, provide direct services, and manage referrals for Child Welfare, Adult Protection, IIM account holders, and other case management services.
  • Integrate historical records, investigation findings, and assessment data into complete family and child functioning evaluations.
  • Document all case activities in the FASS-CMS system (or approved hard-copy format) and submit verbal outcomes within 24 hours and written case notes/summaries within 48 hours to the supervisor.
  • Participate in weekly rotating on-call/emergency duty to ensure 24/7 response capability for critical incidents.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information and records in accordance with Federal law and Agency policy.

Schedule and Compensation Notes

  • Regular Tour of Duty: 40 hours per week (8 hours/day, Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. flexible window)
  • On-call, emergency, and holiday hours compensated at the agreed labor rate for actual hours worked
  • Telework authorized only by the Superintendent or delegated designee
  • Two weeks' notice required for scheduled personal time off; Contractor must provide qualified replacement coverage for any absences

Performance Expectations

The Agency will benefit from a responsive, professional Social Worker who delivers high-quality case management, meets all court and documentation deadlines, and contributes directly to improved child and family outcomes while maintaining full compliance with the Native American Child Safety Act, tribal law, and Agency procedures.

Salary : $75,000 - $82,000
