HEARTH is a transitional housing program located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh that provides safe housing and supportive services to mothers and children who have experienced homelessness due to domestic violence, homelessness, and other significant trauma. Position Overview
HEARTH is seeking two part-time After School Program Leads to facilitate and grow our onsite After School Program for school aged children living at HEARTH. This individual will lead engaging, structured programming that supports social-emotional development, creativity, and positive peer relationships in a safe and supportive environment.
This role is ideal for someone with experience working with children in education, youth programs, or school settings who enjoys planning activities and leading small groups.
Schedule: Starting Fall 2026
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
- After School Program is 3:30 - 6:00 PM
- 1 hour weekly planning/coordination meeting
- 12-15 hours per week
The program currently operates three days per week, with plans to expand to Monday-Friday as the program grows. Expansion will be discussed collaboratively and based on the two After School Leads’ availability and comfort in the role. Schedules and responsibilities will be coordinated between the two leads in partnership with HEARTH staff.
Additional Weekly Commitment - Monday Night Childcare: Starting Summer 2026
On Mondays, when Monday Night Childcare is in session, the After School Program Lead will be expected to stay an additional 1.5 hours to support childcare programming for children ages 0-10. This is 2-3 Mondays per month at 6:00 - 7:30 PM. Responsibilities include:
- Leading and supporting the childcare hour with volunteers and children
- Welcoming and letting in volunteers and/or enrichment providers
- Supporting bathroom breaks for children
- Supporting positive behavior management alongside volunteers
- Assisting with cleanup and closing duties at the end of the session
Responsibilities
- Lead structured after school programming for school aged children living at HEARTH
- Pick up children from their transportation at HEARTH and ensure a smooth transition to the program
- Plan and facilitate engaging activities (homework support, creative projects, games, social-emotional learning activities, etc.)
- Foster a positive, supportive environment for children who have experienced trauma
- Use positive behavior management strategies to guide children in learning and social interactions
- Communicate directly with parents about attendance, behavior, and programming updates
- Collaborate with HEARTH staff, volunteers, and enrichment partners
- Engage and direct volunteers supporting the program during the day
- Support visiting enrichment programs (for example, local youth arts organizations)
- Adapt programming to meet the needs of a small but fluctuating group of children as families move in and out of the program
Qualifications
- Experience working with school aged children
- Strong group facilitation and communication skills
- Ability to plan structured, engaging activities
- Trained or interested in training in trauma-informed care
- Skilled in or willing to learn positive behavior management tools
- Comfortable engaging/directing volunteers during programming
- Comfortable communicating directly with parents regarding children’s participation & needs
- Reliable, organized, and collaborative
- 2-3 professional references required
- Clearances required: PA Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse Clearance, NSOR Clearance, and FBI Fingerprinting Clearance
