What are the responsibilities and job description for the Opening Childcare Staff - Downtown Early Childhood Education Center position at Heart of the Valley YMCA?
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Opening Childcare Staff Member plays a critical role in setting the tone for the day in our childcare program. This position is responsible for welcoming children and families in the early morning hours, ensuring a smooth and safe transition into the program day. The ideal candidate is dependable, nurturing, and able to create a calm, caring, and engaging environment from the moment the center opens.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Arrive promptly to prepare the classroom and center for the arrival of children.
- Greet children and families warmly; assist with sign-in procedures and transitions.
- Monitor and engage children in developmentally appropriate activities.
- Follow opening procedures including safety checks, breakfast/snack setup, and classroom readiness.
- Ensure a safe and clean environment is maintained at all times.
- Support classroom routines and assist in maintaining behavior expectations.
- Communicate any concerns or incidents to the Lead Teacher or Supervisor.
- Adhere to licensing regulations, center policies, and health/safety protocols.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience working with children in a licensed childcare setting preferred.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Must pass background check and meet all state/local childcare licensing requirements.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and actively engage with children on the floor.

- Must be able to work in a noisy and active environment and manage multiple tasks and demands simultaneously.
- Frequent interaction with children, families, and team members in a dynamic and fast-paced setting.
