Heart of Ellsworth is a nationally accredited Main Street America organization dedicated to supporting downtown Ellsworth’s economic and cultural vitality while protecting its historic character. Heart of Ellsworth earned full Main Street America accreditation in 2024 and works through the nationally proven Four Point Approach: Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.


Our mission is to promote artistic, economic, educational, environmental, cultural, and historic activities in the downtown area of the city of Ellsworth, Maine to provide a vibrant community for all residents, businesses, non-profit organizations and local Government.


Recognized by GrowSmart Maine, Mainebiz, and Maine Development Foundation, our work continues to earn competitive state and national grant support. In 2025, nearly 1,900 volunteer hours and more than 50 sponsors and community partners helped make this work possible.

About the Role

Heart of Ellsworth is seeking a creative, dependable, and community-minded Social Media Marketing Intern for the Fall 2026 semester.

This internship will focus exclusively on supporting Heart of Ellsworth’s social media marketing. The intern will help create and manage content that promotes downtown businesses, community events, creative programming, organizational initiatives, and the people and places that make Ellsworth distinctive.

The ideal candidate enjoys creating social content, understands how organizations communicate across platforms, and is interested in gaining hands-on experience with content planning, writing, design, short-form video, audience engagement, and performance tracking.

Professional social media experience is not required. We welcome applicants who have developed relevant skills through personal social media accounts, college coursework, student organizations, volunteer work, local businesses, or independent creative projects.

This is a 12-week hybrid internship requiring 10 hours per week, including one in-person workday each week in Ellsworth, Maine. This is a paid internship.


What You’ll Do
  • Create, schedule, and publish social media content for Heart of Ellsworth’s platforms.
  • Write captions and develop graphics, photographs, reels, short-form videos, stories, and other social-first content.
  • Help maintain the social media content calendar and organize planned and published content.
  • Engage positively and professionally with followers, downtown businesses, and community partners.
  • Monitor basic performance information, including reach, engagement, views, and audience response.
  • Assist in developing and implementing focused social media campaigns supporting Small Business Saturday, Giving Tuesday, or both.
  • Maintain Heart of Ellsworth’s visual and written brand standards and protect organizational accounts, files, and login information.
  • Participate in weekly check-ins and a final evaluation with the Assistant Director and Executive Director.
  • Some evenings and occasional weekends may be required to capture community events, programs, and activities.


Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, public relations, graphic design, media production, business, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
  • Strong writing, communication, and proofreading skills.
  • A creative eye for photography, video, graphics, and visual presentation.
  • Basic familiarity with Canva, CapCut, or similar content creation platforms.
  • Organized, dependable, proactive, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable receiving feedback and revising work.
  • Able to work independently while communicating regularly with a supervisor.
  • Experience creating content for a personal, professional, student, or community social media account (preferred).
  • Experience supporting a nonprofit organization, local business, community program, or student organization (preferred).
  • Interest in downtown development, local businesses, arts and culture, events, or community engagement (preferred).

  • Three to five examples of social media content you have created or accounts you have helped manage.
  • Examples may include social media links, a Google Drive folder, a Canva portfolio, a personal website, screenshots, or another accessible format. We are interested in seeing each applicant’s creativity, communication skills, and potential.
