Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Shop Foreman/Lead Cabinet Maker to lead the day-to-day operations of a custom cabinetry shop. The Shop Foreman/Lead Cabinet Maker will oversee production, coordinate shop personnel, maintain quality standards, manage workflow, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to specifications.
The ideal candidate is an experienced cabinetmaker or woodworker with strong leadership skills, excellent attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of custom cabinetry construction and finishing.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily shop operations and production schedules.
- Assign work and coordinate activities among cabinetmakers, woodworkers, and shop personnel.
- Read and interpret cabinet/millwork drawings, shop drawings, cut lists, and specifications.
- Ensure cabinets and components are built accurately and to established quality standards.
- Monitor project progress and identify potential delays or production issues early.
- Coordinate with designers, project managers, installers, and other team members to resolve questions and maintain workflow.
- Inspect work throughout the production process to ensure accuracy, fit, finish, and craftsmanship.
- Train, mentor, and develop shop employees.
- Promote a clean, organized, and professional shop environment.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of machinery, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain compliance with company safety procedures and applicable workplace safety requirements.
- Monitor material usage and help control waste and production costs.
- Assist with material ordering, inventory management, and organization of lumber, sheet goods, hardware, and supplies.
- Troubleshoot construction and production problems and develop practical solutions.
- Help establish and improve shop processes, production methods, and quality-control procedures.
- Perform hands-on cabinetmaking and woodworking.
Qualifications
- 20 years of experience in custom cabinetry, woodworking, millwork, or a closely related field.
- Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of cabinet construction, woodworking techniques, hardware, and materials.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings and measurements.
- Excellent understanding of tolerances, fit, finish, and high-end craftsmanship.
- Experience operating woodworking machinery and power tools.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead by example in a hands-on production environment.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and attention to detail.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with woodworking machines, CNC machinery and/or CNC-based production.
- Familiarity with digital shop drawings.
- Experience with spray finishing or coordination with finishing departments.
- Experience with high-end residential cabinetry and millwork.
- Experience coordinating cabinetry for complex residential projects.
