What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grant Writer position at Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary?
Under supervision of the Director of Development, the Grant Writer will research potential fundraising sources, work with staff to gather data and supporting information, draft preliminary funding requests, meet all deadlines and funding source requirements, track department fundraising activity, and provide updates to organizational leadership and funders as required. The Grant Writer must be passionate about nature and the environment and thrive in a flexible and team oriented environment.
Grant Writer duties and responsibilities are as follows:
- Research and identify grant opportunities from government and non-government agencies, foundations, sponsors, and individuals that match the needs of the organization.
- Research, develop, and draft grant proposals and supporting documents based on the funding requirements of the organization and submit draft proposals to the Development Director for review and approval.
- Establish robust working relationships with staff, board, volunteers, and affiliate groups as appropriate.
- Respond to internal and external queries on drafted and submitted proposals.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with fund providers and other stakeholders.
- Maintain records and submit reports related to grant opportunities.
- Maintain master fundraising spreadsheet(s) in real time in order to streamline funding opportunities and improve department efficiency
- Maintain and update needs and grant status boards to accurately reflect current funding needs and asks
- Provide bi-weekly fundraising status reports for the Development Director as required
- Thoroughly understand the dynamics and unique business and operational requirements of the non-profit.
Grant Writer skills and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, creative writing, or natural science
- Previous grant writing experience or Knowledge and familiarity with development, research and prospect management practices preferred
- Ability to study and understand the unique and complex programs and funding requirements of the organization
- Strong research skills and knowledge of information sources
- Multitasking, organizational, and time management skills are required
- Ability to handle confidential matters with utmost integrity
- Excellent knowledge of Word, Excel, and Power Point required
- Ability to learn and effectively manage sales, CRMs, and fundraising databases
- Must be able to work autonomously with little supervision
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities with attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with TWC leadership and donors.
- Willingness to work with team members on activities that may not be directly related to daily activities, such as events.
