Job Summary: To perform a variety of venipuncture techniques and collect and process blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures. Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of infection control and sterile procedures. Interpersonal skills to allay pay patient fears and interact with staff. Ability to perform standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques. Ability to comply with clinical protocol, specifications, and procedures. Ability to complete and maintain documents and records.
Responsibilities:
- Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles.
- Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explains procedures, allays fears, and elicits cooperation.
- Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
- Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays.
- Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
- Complies with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.

Physical and Environmental Demands:
Requires occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
Education and Experience: High school diploma/GED.
