JOB PURPOSE:
The Risk Management & Patient Safety Operations Manager provides operational leadership for the day-to-day activities of the Risk Management & Patient Safety Department. The Manager translates departmental strategy and priorities established by the Director into consistent operational execution by leading workflow and service delivery, supporting consultant development, promoting quality and standardization, and facilitating high-quality member services.
The Operations Manager serves as a working manager, maintaining responsibility for a reduced portfolio of member hospitals while leading and coordinating department operations through workload management, quality and consistency review, process standardization, program coordination, and consultant coaching. The Manager exercises operational leadership within established departmental priorities, policies, and delegated authority. The Director retains responsibility for departmental strategy, formal staff supervision and performance management, and approval of significant personnel, program, budgetary, and strategic decisions.

Communication & Consultation
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide risk management and patient safety consultation to assigned members.
- Provide day-to-day operational leadership, guidance, and coaching to consultants.
- Facilitate collaboration across RMPS and with organizational partners.
Analysis & Problem Solving
- Analyze claims data, regulations, healthcare trends, and other relevant information.
- Review consultant work products to promote quality, consistency, and adherence to departmental standards.
- Address routine operational and service delivery issues and recommend significant improvements to the Director.
- Provide feedback to the Director regarding consultant performance and professional development needs.
Organization & Project Management
- Lead implementation of departmental priorities and service expectations established by the Director.
- Coordinate hospital assignments, consultant workloads, annual service schedules, coverage, and follow-up activities.
- Lead standardization of Risk Review Guides, workflows, and documentation practices.
- Provide operational leadership for consultant-led programs, including timelines, deliverables, and resource needs.
- Maintain a reduced portfolio of member hospitals and provide additional coverage as needed.
Education
- Lead operational coordination of departmental educational activities to promote consistency and timely delivery.
- Collaborate with consultants, the Director, CMO, and organizational partners on educational programming.
- Present workshops, webinars, and other member education as needed.
Professional Practice
- Lead onboarding, coaching, and operational development of consultants in collaboration with the Director.
- Maintain current knowledge of risk management, patient safety, medical professional liability, and applicable healthcare standards.
- Address routine workflow, quality, and service concerns and escalate significant concerns to the Director.
- Promote adherence to departmental standards.
- Travel to support member and departmental responsibilities.
PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Operational Leadership & Implementation
- Lead day-to-day implementation of departmental strategy, priorities, and service expectations established by the Director.
- Lead and coordinate day-to-day department operations, timelines, workflow, and service activities.
- Identify operational needs, implement improvements within delegated authority, and recommend significant changes to the Director for approval.
2. Team Coordination & Consultant Support
- Lead coordination of hospital assignments, workloads, annual service schedules, and coverage within parameters established with the Director.
- Provide day-to-day operational leadership, guidance, coaching, and support to consultants.
- Provide feedback to the Director regarding consultant performance, work quality, and professional development needs.
- Lead onboarding and operational integration of new consultants in collaboration with the Director.
3. Quality, Standardization & Continuous Improvement
- Review consultant reports and work products for quality, consistency, and alignment with departmental standards.
- Standardize Risk Review Guides, workflows, documentation practices, and operational processes.
- Monitor service delivery and follow-up activities and recommend opportunities for improvement and escalate significant concerns to the Director.
4. Program & Education Coordination
- Provide operational leadership and coordination for consultant-led programs while preserving consultant ownership and subject-matter responsibility for assigned initiatives.
- Collaborate with consultants, the CMO, and other organizational partners to support educational and program objectives.
5. Client Relationship Management & Consultation
- Maintain responsibility for a reduced portfolio of member hospitals relative to consultant assignments.
- Provide direct risk management and patient safety consultation, assessments, education, and follow-up to assigned members.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with hospital leadership, physicians, and clinical staff.
- Collaborate with Claims, Underwriting, the CMO, and other organizational partners as appropriate to member needs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: (Qualifications for this position)
- Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in a healthcare-related field and relevant healthcare experience required; nursing or other licensed healthcare professional degree strongly preferred.
- Experience in risk management, patient safety, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, or a related healthcare field.
- Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, mentoring, or coordinating the work of professional staff.
- Experience working with hospitals, physicians, healthcare providers, and senior leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate workflow, manage competing priorities, and support multiple programs and initiatives.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of applicable healthcare standards, regulations, patient safety principles, and medical professional liability risk.
- Strong judgment, problem-solving, quality-review, and coaching skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with department leadership and the broader team.
- Proficiency with standard business and departmental technology.
- Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification; if not currently certified, certification must be obtained within the approved timeframe.
