Position Summary

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is responsible for administering medications and treatments as delegated and supervised by a licensed nurse in accordance with federal, state, and facility regulations. The CMA assists in maintaining the highest degree of quality resident care while promoting resident dignity, independence, safety, and well-being.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Medication Administration

  • Administer medications as ordered by the physician and delegated by the licensed nurse.
  • Prepare, distribute, and document medications according to facility policy and state regulations.
  • Observe residents for adverse reactions, side effects, or changes in condition and promptly report findings to the licensed nurse.
  • Maintain accurate medication administration records (MARs) and treatment administration records (TARs).
  • Ensure medications are stored, handled, and disposed of according to facility policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct medication cart audits and maintain medication cart cleanliness and organization.

Resident Care

  • Provide routine personal care assistance as needed within scope of practice.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) when required.
  • Monitor and report changes in residents' physical, emotional, or mental status.
  • Promote resident rights, dignity, privacy, and independence.

Documentation

  • Accurately document medication administration, treatments, observations, and resident responses.
  • Report medication errors, incidents, or variances immediately to the supervising nurse.
  • Complete required reports and documentation in a timely manner.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures, including hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain compliance with CMS, state, facility, and professional standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Attend required in-services, meetings, and educational programs.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Communicate effectively with residents, families, physicians, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members.
  • Assist in orienting and mentoring new staff as assigned.
  • Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with coworkers and residents.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Licensure/Certification

  • Current Certified Medication Aide certification in the State of Texas.
  • Current Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification in good standing preferred.
  • Current CPR certification preferred.

Experience

  • Experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, or rehabilitation preferred.
  • Knowledge of medication administration practices and documentation systems preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic pharmacology and medication administration principles.
  • Ability to accurately read, understand, and follow physician orders.
  • Strong observation and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
  • Basic computer and electronic health record (EHR) skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, transfer, and reposition residents as needed.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to push medication carts and transport supplies.
  • Ability to perform duties requiring visual acuity and manual dexterity.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • May be required to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency staffing situations.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions and stressful situations requiring independent judgment.
