Job Description:
Responsibilities
Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist II to work as a member of the state public health Mycology laboratory team in the US. The Research Scientist II will participate in the characterization of emerging and drug-resistant fungal pathogens causing superficial to invasive infection. For example, Candida auris, C. glabrata, Trichophyton indotineae, T. mentagrophytes genotype VII, and dimorphic fungal pathogens. State-of-the-art methods employed in this work include numerous molecular detection and sequencing techniques.
The Research Scientist II (RSII) will collaborate with Mycology team members to analyze next generation genomic sequencing, high performance computing, and epidemiology to study fungal pathogens of public health importance. This will include data generated by both whole genome and gene targeted methods, to identify and further characterize fungal pathogens, solving outbreaks, developing faster tests for antimicrobial resistance. The RSII will develop, improve, modify, and operate data analysis pipelines, perform requested custom analyses, and generate analyzed results and reports to inform public health decisions. Other related duties as assigned.
This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health!
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology or a related field and three years of research experience; OR a Master's degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Doctorate in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of experience in bioinformatics data analysis and use of scientific software to analyze next generation sequence data for the detection and/or characterization of fungal pathogens. Experience working in cloud environments, preferably Google Cloud Platform. Experience in programming (Python, Java, C/C , perl or other programming/scripting languages). Experience in collaborative coding environments (GitHub). Experience with interfacing sequence reports and results to laboratory information management (LIMS) systems.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a gloves, and a lab coat.
