PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Peer Support Specialist supports the recovery needs of patients receiving Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment at White House Clinics. The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is an individual in stable recovery who is able to use their personal, lived experience in recovery to guide and advocate for patients during the recovery process. The PSS serves as a connection between patients/individuals in the community struggling with substance use disorder and recovery supports available to them. The PSS will engage individuals in all points of recovery to teach and model the skills necessary to support long term recovery. As an individual in recovery, the PSS role requires flexibility and self-direction, as well as the ability to problem solve to assist patient in meeting their recovery goals.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES
  • Meet with patients during medical and/or behavioral health visits to assist the care team with engaging patients in SUD treatment services by:
    • Applying motivational strategies and sharing of personal recovery journey to enhancing patient’s motivation to engage with appropriate treatment services;
    • Connecting patients to referral services, when needed; and/or
    • Scheduling patients for SUD services at WHC if appropriate.
  • Maintain telephone contact with patients waiting to receive SUD treatment services.
  • Work with patients to develop a Person-Centered Recovery Plan, and develop recovery goals to be successful.
    • The Recovery Plan serves as a collaborative tool with Enabling Services to overcome psychosocial needs and is shared with care team providers.
  • Remind patients of upcoming appointments and help identify barriers that could prevent compliance. Work closely with all members of the care team to ensure patient compliance while promoting personal accountability of the patient. Follow up with patients who have missed an appointment.
  • Identify community recovery support meetings (i.e. AA/NA, Celebrate Recovery, etc) and share with MAT patients. Attend community meetings to model positive behaviors for patients. Provide transportation to meetings if needed. Encourage patients to remain active in some type of community recovery program if possible.
  • Utilize a Telephone Recovery Program to provide 24 hour support to patients, including weekly contacts to patients receiving services, regular updates to the care team on patient functioning and needs, and availability to respond to calls from patients during and after clinic hours.
  • Serve as a liaison between the treatment team and the patient. Document all contacts in the patient’s electronic health record and communicate regularly with other members of the patients care team.
  • Assist the care team in developing action plans specific to patients as needed. Meet twice a month with assigned supervisor for required supervision according to state regulations.
  • Complete and assist with other duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Reports to the Manager of Patient Support Services with support from the clinic’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker(s), and ultimately reports to the Director of Behavioral Health Service.

None.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office and healthcare environment and involves frequent contact with staff and the public. Work will also be performed in the community partner office settings (Emergency Department, Jail, etc.). Position may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Evening and/or weekend work is required. Work may be stressful at times.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Regular travel within the community to meet patient needs is a requirement for this position.
WORK HOURS
37.5 hours per week, subject to wage and hour laws. Anticipate work to occur outside of normal business hours on a regular basis. Peer Support Specialist will participate in an on call rotation, which will require responding to telephone calls outside of clinic hours. Occasional overtime may be required.
SALARY
Starting at $15.04 per hour, based on experience.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum Experience: None.
Required License: Kentucky Certification as Peer Support Specialist. A valid driver’s license. American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will have been in stable recovery in the community for at least two years. Candidates must have a commitment to helping the Substance Use Disorder population and hold values consistent with those of the organization. Successful applicants will be mature and well organized with pleasant personality, have a professional, warm, and collaborative demeanor. Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, approach the work in an energetic and creative manner, and be a self-started with strong initiative. Candidates will maintain healthy boundaries with patients and staff and adhere to the organization’s ethical guidelines.
