What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer: National Public Relations & Media Strategy for Hope One Walk position at Healing Home Group, INC.?
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections.
Healing Home Group is seeking an experienced public relations professional to help develop a comprehensive media and communications strategy for Hope One Walk, a nationwide awareness campaign beginning January 4, 2027. Hope One Walk is a cross-country journey from Santa Monica, California, to New York City led by burn survivor and Healing Home Group founder Corey Halstead. During the walk, we will visit burn centers, meet with survivors, healthcare professionals, firefighters, and local communities while sharing stories of resilience, recovery, and hope. The journey will also raise awareness and support for Healing Home Group's mission to build transitional housing and long-term support services for burn survivors. We are looking for a volunteer who can help us develop a national public relations strategy, identify media opportunities, create press materials, establish a timeline for local and national media outreach, and provide guidance on maximizing media exposure before and during the walk. By the end of the project, we hope to have a professional media kit, press release templates, messaging recommendations, and a strategic communications plan that can be implemented by our organization and volunteers.
Healing Home Group exists to provide hope, healing, and long-term support for burn survivors. While medical care saves lives, many survivors continue to face years of physical recovery, emotional trauma, financial hardship, and social isolation after leaving the hospital. Hope One Walk was created to change that narrative by bringing national attention to the lifelong journey of burn recovery while inspiring communities across America through stories of resilience and hope. By helping us develop a professional public relations strategy, the volunteer will directly increase our ability to reach burn survivors, engage healthcare professionals, attract community partners, secure corporate sponsors, and build public awareness of our mission. Their work will help ensure that more survivors know they are not alone and that Healing Home Group can continue expanding services to those who need them most.
Healing Home Group has already completed much of the foundational work needed for this project. We have established our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, finalized the Hope One Walk branding, developed our initial route across the United States, launched social media channels, created outreach materials, begun contacting burn centers and potential corporate partners, and built a growing online community. Our team is fully committed to implementing the volunteer's recommendations. We are prepared to meet regularly, provide timely feedback, share organizational materials, and dedicate the necessary time to ensure the project is successful. The communications strategy developed through this partnership will become the foundation for all media outreach leading up to and throughout the Hope One Walk.
Healing Home Group, INC. Mission: To provide compassionate transitional housing, post-burn recovery services, and emotional support for burn survivors and their families following hospital discharge.
