What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical/Dental Coder position at HEAD & NECK SURGICAL ASSOCIATE?
HOURS: M-F; 8am - 5pm (Option to work remotely two days a week after 90 day probationary period)
JOB SUMMARY: Code for all medical and dental office visits and surgeries for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery practice. Gather charge information from Epic to prepare for billing. Enter demographic and insurance information into the patient’s account, as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Researches all information needed to complete the billing process, including getting charge information from physicians.
- Provides CPT codes needed for pre-authorization, based on surgery sheets from physicians.
- Codes information about procedures performed and diagnosis, including office visits, hospital charges, and trauma cases.
- Keys charge information into entry program and produces billing.
- Creates new and/or updates patient accounts by entering accurate demographic and insurance information.
- Assists with error resolution.
- Maintains required billing records, reports, and files.
- Sends weekly report to physicians regarding delinquent dictations.
- Handles adjustments to patient billing accounts, as needed.

- Competent with grammar, spelling, and punctuation to conduct correspondence.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school degree or equivalent.
- Degree and/or training in medical billing and coding.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of three years billing in a health care organization.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and coding.
- Skilled in computer programs, billing software, calculating numbers, creating spreadsheets and reports.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work may require sitting for long periods of time, and also stooping, bending and stretching. This position requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, computer, telephone, calculator, copier, and such other office equipment, as necessary. Employee must have normal range of hearing and eyesight. Position also requires viewing computer screens and typing for long periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office environment and involves frequent contact with patients. Work may be stressful at times. The employee must be comfortable asking patients for money and may have to deal with angry or upset patients.
