Job Summary
HDM Tax Group is seeking an experienced Tax Attorney to join our firm in a full-time in-house role focused on resolving complex federal and state tax matters for individuals and businesses.
We are looking for an attorney who understands that tax controversy is about advocating for the taxpayer. The ideal candidate has experience negotiating with the IRS, developing strategic resolution plans, and achieving favorable outcomes for clients facing audits, collections, or significant tax liabilities.
This is an on-site position based in our Hackensack, NJ office and requires close collaboration with our tax advisors, accountants, and leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Represent clients before the IRS and state tax authorities
- Develop and implement strategies to resolve tax liabilities and enforcement actions
- Handle IRS collection matters including Installment Agreements, Offers in Compromise, penalty abatements, and Currently Not Collectible status
- Analyze IRS transcripts, notices, and financial documentation to determine the best resolution strategy
- Prepare and review financial disclosure forms including Forms 433-A, 433-B, and Offer in Compromise applications
- Draft legal correspondence and responses to IRS notices and examinations
- Provide legal guidance to the firm’s tax professionals on complex tax matters and client cases
- Represent clients during audits, appeals, and negotiations with IRS Revenue Officers
- Assist clients in becoming compliant with tax filing requirements
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in the United States
- 3 years of experience handling tax controversy, IRS collections, or tax resolution matters
- Strong understanding of IRS procedures, taxpayer rights, and federal tax law
- Experience negotiating with IRS agents, Revenue Officers, or the Automated Collection System
