Job Summary
The Epic Operational Database Administrator (ODBA) is responsible for the administration, maintenance, optimization, and support of Epic’s ODB (Chronicles/Cache/IRIS) and associated database environments. This role ensures high availability, performance, reliability, and security of database systems that directly support clinical and operational workflows across the health system.The ODBA collaborates closely with Epic application teams, system engineers, reporting teams, and infrastructure groups to maintain a stable and scalable Epic ecosystem in support of clinicians, staff, and patient care services.
Key Responsibilities
Key ResponsibilitiesDatabase Administration & MaintenanceAdminister, configure, and support Epic ODB / Chronicles / InterSystems Cache or IRIS database environments.Perform routine database maintenance including indexing, integrity checks, capacity planning, and optimization.Manage database instances, storage structures, and configuration parameters for optimal performance.Develop and maintain database monitoring tools and alerting dashboards.Performance & OptimizationProactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve performance issues across database layers.Work with Epic TS (Technical Services) and internal Epic teams to analyze Chronicles performance metrics.Tune the system to support peak clinical operations, upgrade cycles, and large-scale reporting workloads.Backup, Recovery & High AvailabilityManage backup strategies, recovery procedures, redundancy protocols, and disaster recovery planning for Epic databases.Perform regular disaster recovery tests and validate restore capabilities.Ensure compliance with RTO/RPO requirements and uptime expectations for mission-critical systems.Upgrades & ReleasesPlan, test, and execute Epic version upgrades, SU releases, database patches, and system refresh cycles.Support DR cutovers, environment cloning, and hardware migrations.Document change activities and follow established change management processes.Security & ComplianceMaintain security standards for access, permissions, and auditing of all database environments.Work with cybersecurity teams to implement database hardening and encryption policies.Ensure regulatory compliance with HIPAA, data privacy, and organizational IT policies.Collaboration & SupportProvide operational and on-call support for production and non-production Epic environments.Partner with Epic application analysts, Clarity/Caboodle teams, and technical services for issue resolution.Assist with automation initiatives, scripting, and process improvements.Shape
Skill Requirements
QualificationsRequiredBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).3–5+ years of experience with InterSystems Cache/IRIS, Chronicles, or Epic ODB administration.Strong understanding of Linux/UNIX systems, file systems, and TCP/IP networking.Experience with monitoring tools (Epic’s native tools, Kibana, Splunk, Grafana, or similar).Knowledge of backup/recovery technologies and high-availability architectures.Ability to participate in after-hours support and on-call rotations.PreferredEpic ODBA Certification or Chronicles Database Certification.Healthcare IT experience in a large hospital or multi-facility system.Familiarity with Epic environments (Hyperspace, Interconnect, Web BLOBs, Reporting Workbench).Scripting experience (Python, Bash, PowerShell).Experience with virtualization platforms, SAN storage, and load-balanced environments.Key CompetenciesStrong problem-solving and analytical skills.Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical IT environment.Excellent communication and documentation capabilities.Commitment to reliability, system stability, and continuous improvement.
