About This Role
A Structural Designer at HBK Engineering in Chicago or Oak Brook is a position responsible for designing engineering systems for overhead and subsurface utility projects with increased independence and leadership responsibilities. This role requires using engineering judgment and problem-solving skills to independently address unique and complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges with minimal oversight. The position includes coaching and mentoring entry-level staff while owning all phases of the design lifecycle from initiation through construction completion and project closeout.

What You'll Do
- Produce detailed structural design drawings and foundation plans.
- Apply AutoCAD expertise to develop and manage design elements in coordination with utility construction plans, ensuring adherence to department CAD standards.
- Revise plans based on redlines and prepare accurate as-built drawings.
- Collaborate with engineers and designers across disciplines to resolve design issues and support project development.
- Maintain organized project electronic files and archives.
- Provide guidance on CAD techniques and support skill development within the team.
- Continuously develop expertise in approved CAD applications. .
What You'll Bring
- 2–7 years of experience in structural or civil design/drafting within an engineering consulting environment
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D and 3D) — required
- Working knowledge of Revit and/or Autodesk Inventor
- Experience producing structural drawings including foundation details, steel plans, connection details, As-Builts, and Bills of Materials
- CAD Drafter Certificate, Associate's degree in drafting/design technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Familiarity with Xrefs, raster tools, and standard drawing management practices
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Experience with Civil 3D, particularly for utility or infrastructure-related projects
- Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu for markup, QA/QC, and document management
- Field experience supporting engineers with construction verification or site visits
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
- Exposure to lead service line replacement or similar municipal infrastructure projects
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy and standards compliance
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams
