Lead Teacher
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the EC Director, the Lead EC Teacher supports the success and growth of students with disabilities by guiding high-quality instruction, fostering compliance with federal and state EC regulations, and mentoring EC staff. This role ensures the implementation of specially designed instruction aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and district goals, provides instructional coaching and support to EC teachers and assistants, promotes inclusive practices, and serves as a liaison between school teams and the EC Department.
Essential Functions
- Supports the implementation of specially designed instruction aligned with IEP goals and North Carolina Extended or Standard Course of Study.
- Mentors and provides instructional coaching to EC teachers and support staff, modeling best practices in instruction, behavior support, and data collection.
- Assists in the development and implementation of compliant and high-quality IEPs.
- Collaborates with general education staff to promote inclusive practices and supports co-teaching models where applicable.
- Assists school teams with data collection, progress monitoring, and analysis to inform instruction and services.
- Ensures IEP services are delivered with fidelity and in compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
- Provides on-site guidance regarding EC procedures, timelines, and documentation (e.g., IEP development, reevaluations, progress reporting).
- Collaborates with related service providers, school psychologists, and administrators to coordinate EC services.
- Maintains effective communication with parents/guardians and participates in IEP meetings as needed.
- Participates in professional learning communities and district-level EC meetings.
- Supports implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and other behavior frameworks.
- Facilitates professional development sessions and shares resources with EC staff.
- Serves as a point of contact for EC-related concerns and communicates with the EC Director regarding school-level needs and trends.
- May provide direct instruction to students when needed, including in specialized programs or support models.
- Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the EC Director, Principal, or other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Travel Requirements

- Knowledge of Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) and data-based decision making.
- Strong skills in mentoring and coaching adults.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with a range of staff members, students, and families.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with EC data management systems (e.g., ECATS), curriculum resources, and instructional technologies.

Qualifications Profile
- North Carolina Exceptional Children teaching license in appropriate area(s) (e.g., General Curriculum, Adaptive Curriculum).
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required; Master’s degree in Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or Educational Leadership preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of five years of successful experience teaching in special education, with at least three years in the current district preferred. Experience in leadership or coaching roles strongly preferred.
