TITLE: Substitute Bus Monitor


REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation


SUPERVISES: N/A


TERM: As needed

 

JOB GOAL: To ensure the safety, supervision, and support of students during school bus transportation. The Bus Monitor assists the driver with boarding procedures, enforces safety protocols, and supports students with diverse needs to ensure a secure and orderly environment on the school bus.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to interact effectively with children of all ages and abilities.
  • Must pass a background check and TB test.
  • Must complete CPR, First Aid, and Bus Safety training as required by the district.
  • Experience working with children, including those with special needs, preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise students while on the bus to ensure a safe and respectful environment throughout the route.
  • Maintain order and enforce bus safety rules according to district policy.
  • Assist students in boarding and exiting the bus safely, including helping young children and students with special needs.
  • Secure wheelchairs and adaptive equipment using appropriate restraint systems, requiring bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations, including assisting with bus evacuations.
  • Communicate with students regarding behavioral expectations and safety procedures; maintain awareness using appropriate vision and hearing acuity.
  • Provide physical assistance as needed to students with disabilities or medical conditions, including lifting or repositioning students.
  • Collaborate closely with the bus driver to monitor student behavior and ensure a safe bus environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bus interior; ensure debris and obstacles are removed for safe transit.
  • Document student ridership and report behavioral or safety incidents to appropriate school personnel.
  • Attend mandatory safety, first aid, and bus monitor training sessions.
  • Board and exit the bus multiple times during the route and remain seated and alert for extended periods while supervising students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of student transportation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:

General Overview:
School bus monitors must be physically capable of assisting general education and special education students with safely boarding and exiting the bus. This role requires the ability to act in emergencies, observe surroundings effectively, and maintain stamina throughout a bus route.

Key Physical Requirements

  1. Mobility and Strength
  • Climbing/Descending Steps: Ability to climb and descend bus steps unassisted.
  • Physical Assistance: Capable of helping students (including those with disabilities) on and off the bus.
  • Emergency Evacuation: May need to carry or drag students from the vehicle during emergencies.
  1. Visual Acuity and Color Perception
  • Visual Acuity: Must have appropriate vision (with or without corrective lenses) to monitor students and surroundings.
  • Color Perception: Must be able to distinguish colors for safety and observation.
  1. Dexterity
  • Manual Dexterity: Must be able to operate bus doors and emergency exits.
  1. Stamina
  • Physical Endurance: Should possess sufficient stamina to remain alert and active throughout the bus route.
  1. Other Physical Requirements
  • Limb Function: Must be able to physically perform safety duties.
  • Pedal Operation: May be required to depress brake and fuel pedals, necessitating a specific level of physical force.
  • Environmental Exposure: Must be able to work in varying weather conditions and tolerate minimal exposure to fumes or airborne particles.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of substitute personnel.
