Position Overview

Haywood County Rescue is seeking skilled, compassionate, and highly motivated Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) to join our professional ambulance service team. The AEMT provides advanced prehospital and interfacility patient care while ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused transportation services.

This position supports a diverse operational environment including Basic and Advanced Life Support interfacility transports (IFT), hospital discharges, dialysis transports, transportation to medical appointments, convalescent transports, specialty patient movements, event medical standbys, airport and flight crew transportation support, and community medical services. The AEMT is expected to function independently within their scope of practice while demonstrating strong clinical judgment, professionalism, and leadership.

Essential Job Functions

Advanced Patient Care

• Provide patient assessment, treatment, monitoring, and transportation in accordance with state regulations, medical protocols, and physician orders.
• Perform Advanced EMT-level skills and interventions within authorized scope of practice.
• Obtain and interpret vital signs and patient history to identify changes in patient condition.
• Initiate and maintain approved vascular access procedures as permitted by state and local protocols.
• Administer approved medications and therapies within the AEMT scope of practice.
• Monitor patient response to treatment and communicate significant findings to receiving facilities and medical control when appropriate.
• Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care while maintaining dignity, privacy, and respect.

Interfacility and Specialty Transport Services

• Conduct Basic and Advanced Life Support interfacility transports between hospitals, specialty centers, rehabilitation facilities, behavioral health facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and other healthcare settings.
• Manage patients requiring ongoing monitoring, medication administration, oxygen therapy, intravenous therapy, and specialized transport needs.
• Assist with hospital discharges, physician appointments, dialysis transportation, and convalescent transports.
• Coordinate care with sending and receiving healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.

Flight Crew and Aviation Support

• Provide transportation support for air medical flight crews and aviation partners.
• Assist with patient transfers involving fixed-wing and rotor-wing medical transport operations.
• Coordinate patient handoffs and maintain effective communication with flight teams, dispatch personnel, and healthcare facilities.

Event Medical Standby Operations

• Provide medical standby coverage for sporting events, festivals, public gatherings, and community events.
• Assess and treat patients presenting with illness or injury during standby assignments.
• Coordinate emergency transport when patient conditions warrant higher levels of care.

Vehicle Operations and Equipment Management

• Safely operate emergency and non-emergency vehicles in accordance with state laws and company policies.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections and ensure operational readiness.
• Maintain ambulances, equipment, and supplies in a clean and service-ready condition.
• Report equipment deficiencies, vehicle issues, and safety concerns promptly.

Documentation and Communication

• Complete accurate and thorough patient care reports (PCRs) and transport documentation.
• Document assessments, treatments, medications, patient responses, and transport information.
• Communicate effectively with dispatch, healthcare providers, patients, family members, and coworkers.
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards.

Leadership and Professional Development

• Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for EMT personnel when appropriate.
• Participate in continuing education and competency training.
• Support quality improvement initiatives and clinical excellence programs.
• Maintain all required certifications and credentials.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

• Current Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification in the State of North Carolina or National Registry reciprocity
• Current CPR certification for Healthcare Providers.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass criminal background screening, drug testing, and physical requirements.
• Ability to obtain and maintain all required operational certifications.

Preferred

• One or more years of experience in ambulance operations, interfacility transport, or emergency medical services.
• Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) certification.
• Experience with intravenous therapy and advanced transport patients.
• Experience in private ambulance, critical care transport support, or hospital-based EMS operations.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 125 lbs, move, carry, push, and pull patients and equipment safely.
• Ability to utilize stretchers, stair chairs, wheelchairs, and specialized transport equipment.
• Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, bending, reaching, and climbing.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions and healthcare environments.
• Ability to meet all physical requirements necessary for ambulance operations.
