CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Coordinator-Instructional Materials, perform a variety of technical support duties involved in the selection, acquisition, maintenance and distribution of books, textbooks and instructional materials; oversee and participate in circulation activities; provide general, reference and audio-visual assistance to staff. Perform clerical work of above-average difficulty which requires the application of library skills. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Perform a variety of technical support duties involved in the selection, acquisition, maintenance and distribution of books, textbooks, audio-visual and instructional materials. Keeps up-to-date electronic database of all materials available at the Instructional Resource Center. Oversee and participate in circulation activities; process, compile and prepare library materials for distribution and circulation; receive check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; evaluate and maintain orderliness of shelved materials. Provide general and reference assistance to staff; assist staff with locating instructional materials and resources; compile information and prepare instructional support materials; respond to inquiries and provide information. Demonstrates and explains to staff the use of computer and other educational technology. Instructs staff in the use of educational technology such as data and video projectors, scanners, printers, laminators, poster makers and online public access catalog (OPAC). Perform general clerical work such as typing, duplicating and entering information into an assigned computer system; generate computerized reports; receive phone calls; receive, sort and route mail; establish and maintain filing systems, including catalog cards and requisition forms. Process purchase requisitions for books, supplies and materials; type and proofread purchase orders; receive and store books, supplies and materials. Inspects returned materials for damage. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to library equipment, inventory, overdue and lost materials and purchase requisitions. Operate and maintain a variety of office and library equipment including a laminator, television, VCR, projector, copier, cassette player, calculator, typewriter, computer and assigned software. Communicate with District personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to materials. Researches and creates educational instructional support materials that are sent to all schools for distribution to staff. Schedule media equipment use for personnel; assist staff with operating equipment. Organize, prepare and maintain library displays, bulletin boards, and preview areas. Visit libraries to convert elementary school catalogs from card to computer readable records; provide training and support to all school sites in the area of library automation. Maintain confidentiality of information and records. OTHER DUTIES: Perform other duties, related to the job, as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Library methods, equipment, procedures and terminology. Appropriate selections and reading levels of students. Library classification systems. Location of materials in the library. Basic math. Operation of a computer and assigned software. Record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. ABILITY TO: Perform a variety of technical support duties involved in the selection, acquisition, maintenance and distribution of books, textbooks and instructional materials. Oversee and participate in circulation activities. Instruct staff in library automation. Provide general and reference assistance to staff. Perform clerical duties related to assigned activities. Process and prepare library materials for classifying, cataloguing and circulation. Make routine math calculations. Maintain records and prepare reports. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Operate a computer and assigned software. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and time lines. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year formal or informal experience working in a library. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Media Center environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Printing or writing legibly. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to shelve and retrieve materials. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to shelve and retrieve materials.
