Do you enjoy working with senior citizens? Are you looking for a position that allows for you to interact and build relationships with the senior population? H.A.R.D.’s Senior Adult Programs are geared towards adults 50 years. We offer social, recreational, educational, and nutritional programs and activities to enhance the lives of older adults, and help them remain healthy, be active and stay independent. We are currently seeking a Senior Center Program Specialist to support our Senior Adult Programs.  

 

 

The primary responsibilities of this positions will be to provide excellent customer service to instructors, volunteers, and customers, ensure daily delivery and safe execution of senior meal program to meal participants, gather data and statistics for reports, and respond to a variety of inquiries from outside agencies and the community. In this role you will have the opportunity to multi-task and transition to a variety of tasks throughout the workday.  

 

 

The ideal candidate will be available to work part-time, will be reliable, dependable and outgoing. 

 

 

Here are the details about the position:   

  • Available Positions: 1 

  • Hourly Rate: $25.05/hour - $33.81/hour

  • Work Schedule: 18 hours/week on weekdays between the hours of 8am and 5pm 

  • Part-Time, Year-Round, Hourly, Non-Exempt Position   

  • Work Location: H.A.R.D.’s Senior Centers in Hayward and Castro Valley 

  • Filing deadline: Ongoing until the position has been filled.

  • Anticipated Start Date: ASAP 

  • Not to exceed 960 hours per fiscal year. (July 1 – June 30)

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision from the Recreation Coordinator II or the Recreation Supervisor, performs a variety of duties and responsibilities to assist with daily operations of Senior Adult Programs, including provide excellent customer service to instructors, volunteers and customers, ensure daily delivery and safe execution of senior meal program to meal participants, gather data and statistics for reports, and respond to a variety of inquires from outside agencies and the community.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents in this class are primarily responsible for senior adult program duties at a specific senior site but may also perform general duties to the overall operations of senior programs that may occur at additional District facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbents may not perform all duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Greet and assist visitors and facility users, provide information and assistance, make referrals as needed
  • Handle participant registration through Web based registration and POS system
  • Deposit funds and reconcile daily transactions and prepare daily closeout reports
  • Serve as receptionist, screen telephone calls, transfer and direct to appropriate staff, take messages and make appointments as necessary
  • Ensure daily delivery and safe execution of senior meal program to meals recipients
  • Monitor activities in facility, aid and ensure compliance with District regulations, maintain facility security
  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers
  • Assist with marketing by creating flyers, newsletters and postcards, utilizing Facebook, the District website and other social media
  • Gather and maintain information for monthly program reports, input data in computer and prepare accurate reports as necessary
  • Perform periodic inspections of facility and AED equipment
  • May open and secure facility before and after program use; prepare facility and set up furniture and or equipment for scheduled activities/events
  • Assist in the implementation of daily programs and special events
  • Maintains good public relations
  • Participates in training sessions and regular staff meetings
  • May provide input regarding program planning
  • At all times, demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors, volunteers and the public
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. The functions of this position are primarily performed in indoor settings; but there may be some outdoor settings as well. There will be exposure to computer screens. Incumbents may be assigned an irregular working schedule including weekends, early mornings, evenings and holidays and may have to travel between various locations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have: hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person, by telephone, and by radio, and to speak loudly in a noisy setting; vision adequate to clearly distinguish objects and persons at a distance and read printed material and computer screens, bodily movement adequate to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; manual dexterity adequate to grasp objects, use fine manipulation, write and operate office machines and equipment; may have to climb, balance stoop or crouch; and strength and endurance to safely lift and carry items of up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Ability and Skill to:

  • Work with the public that are participating in a variety of recreational activities
  • Monitor compliance with District regulations and policies, and general safety practices related to activities; firmly but tactfully enforce rules and regulations
  • React quickly and calmly in emergencies
  • Administer First Aid, CPR and/or artificial respiration
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of people
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with those in contact during the work shift
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Bi-lingual desired

 

Knowledge of:

  • Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, copiers and standard computer programs
  • Complete forms, reports and paperwork
  • Clerical duties, including filing, answering multi-line phones and working on computers
  • Safe food handling practices
  • Standard safety rules and regulations related to public recreation activities

 

Education/Experience/Training:

  • Completion of high school
  • Prior experience with senior population and volunteers
  • Previous clerical experience desirable
  • Proficient in MS Office Programs: Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, Publisher
  • Must possess standard First Aid/CPR/AED and must maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of continued employment
  • Possess a CA Food Handlers Certificate and must maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of continued employment

 

Special Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must pass a fingerprint and/or background clearance prior to employment
  • Verification of ID and ability work in the USA
  • Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series is recommended
  • Provide great service to all customers
  • Run payment transaction through the Point of Sale system
  • Follow and govern H.A.R.D. employee policies and procedures
  • Maintaining a neat and clean appearance at all times
  • Communicate effectively with the public, respond to conflicts, and provide excellent customer service
