Job Title: At Risk Special Programs Paraeducator


Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services

Salary Range: According to USD 261 Classified Rate of Pay Scale


Job Summary:
The special programs paraeducator provides direct support to students with significant needs in
one or more developmental areas. The individual must maintain professionalism at all times,
especially when working with escalated individuals. The individual must adhere to strict levels of
confidentiality and implement Individualized Education Plans with fidelity.


Qualifications and Requirements:


1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. One of the following endorsements:
a. Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 college
hours) or have a minimum of an associate degree.
b. Demonstrate knowledge through formal assessment, (e.g. ParaPro Assessment
(former assessment) or The Paraeducator Learning Network Assessment
(current assessment) within one year from date of hire.

3. Maintain current TB testing as required by Health Department regulations (after
employment offer is made).

 

Performance Responsibilities:


1. Engages students in classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the
supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing learning objectives.
2. Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the
classroom.
3. Assists students in both the special education classroom and in the general education setting.
4. Assists the teacher with scoring tests, keeping records, and making reports as required by the
teacher.
5. Assists the teacher with the physical set up of the classroom.
6. Assists with the integration of technology into the classroom.
7. Assists students in using low vision equipment.
8. Assists students with adaptive magnifying equipment.
9. Frequently assists students with basic needs including but not limited to self-care, hygiene,
feeding (may include tube feeding), toileting, diapering, dressing, and physical transfers.

10. Document and/or report any health concerns, whether ongoing (i.e. diabetes, seizures) or
emergent (i.e., lacerations, bruises).
11. Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.)
for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
12. Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents
for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
13. Implements, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP
team.
14. Understands and implements Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
15. Assists in collecting data and maintaining records in regard to student performance.
16. Assists in collecting data and maintaining records in accordance with Emergency Safety
Intervention requirements
17. Assists in managing classroom routines and procedures.
18. Assists in de-escalation of student behavior and teaching replacement behaviors.
19. Adheres to all procedures and techniques as outlined in the district’s de-escalation training and
maintaining up to date certification.
20. Wears protective clothing and utilizes appropriate protective equipment as requested by the
supervising teacher and/or administrator.
21. Documents all instances of injury in accordance with the district’s workman comp procedures.
22. Engages students in communication systems as instructed by the student’s SLP and IEP.
23. Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records for the purpose of
facilitating instruction; recording student information; and/or meeting mandated requirements.
24. Supports students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g.
restrooms, specials, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for
the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
25. Provides, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of
individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the
purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring students’
success in school.
26. Assists students with individual assignments and IEP goals.
27. Provides a structured environment for students by following the schedule of activities that
promotes the student’s learning opportunities and their independent living skills.
28. Demonstrates dependability, promptness, and regular attendance in order to establish consistent
routines, promote teamwork, and guarantee instructional continuity.
29. Maintains a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain
in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional working environment.
30. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective
functioning of the work unit.
31. Paraeducators at the high school level may be required to assist and instruct students on job
sites.
32. Paraeducators at the high school level may be required to drive student interns to job sites.
33. Other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:


Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as
needed in a fast-pace, high-intensive work environment.
