Summary
Under the general direction of the Community Health Services Manager, the Community Health Services Intern supports the Hays County Health Department by assisting with administrative tasks and projects related to Community Outreach, the Indigent Healthcare Program, and ImmTrac2 services. The intern will help with administrative duties, planning and implementing community events, and collecting and analyzing data. Responsibilities will gradually increase in complexity as the intern receives on-the-job training and gains familiarity with the operational activities of the department’s programs. The intern may also perform other duties as assigned to support the needs of the Health Department.
Responsibilities
- Answers incoming calls, greets visitors, and responds to general County or program-specific inquiries; directs visitors to the appropriate staff or department as needed.
- Uses computer systems and software, including data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, and file management programs, to enter, retrieve, and maintain information.
- Establishes and maintains files related to the Indigent Healthcare Program, ImmTrac2, and community outreach activities.
- Assists, under the direction of the Community Health Services Manager, in developing and implementing a comprehensive community outreach and engagement plan, including increasing public awareness and building partnerships that support the department’s mission and vision.
- Regularly assesses community needs and opportunities to support the growth of the Community Health Services Programs.
- Helps create and distribute marketing and informational materials such as flyers, fact sheets, reports, statistical summaries, and newsletters for targeted audiences.
- Participates in community outreach activities, including door-to-door engagement in neighborhoods, businesses, churches, and other locations.
- Works closely with the Community Health Services Manager to improve public understanding of available health and social service programs in Hays County.
- Supports and promotes community health initiatives that enhance the visibility and impact of the Hays County Health Department.
- Assists in planning, coordinating, and attending outreach events focusing on low-income, underinsured, and marginalized residents of Hays County.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
- Performs other health department duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
- Requires a High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be a Junior or Senior undergraduate student to apply.
- Must complete any additional training within 30 days of notice.
Other Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Class C driver’s license required.
- Must complete HIPAA training within 7 days of employment.
- Preferred ability to speak, understand, and translate in Spanish.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include evenings and weekends, in order to meet the needs of community residents and be present at community functions.
