About the Company

We are an established and growing excavation and utilities contractor with multiple active projects throughout the Denver and surrounding Areas. Our work includes underground utilities, civil infrastructure, and site development. We operate with a tight-knit field and office team and are seeking an experienced Construction Project Accountant who can take ownership of the financial side of our projects while supporting overall office operations.

This role is designed for a seasoned construction accountant from a small-to-mid-size contractor who understands job cost accounting, project billing, and WIP reporting—and who is comfortable operating with a high level of autonomy. This is not an entry-level role.

Ideal Candidate Profile

You are someone who has:

  • Worked several years in construction or civil contracting accounting
  • Managed job costs, billing, and financial reporting across multiple active projects
  • Served as the go-to accounting professional for project managers and ownership
  • A practical understanding of how field operations, change orders, and billing cycles intersect

Required Experience & Skills (5 years preferred)

  • Construction accounting (3–5 years):
  • Job cost tracking and cost-to-complete analysis
  • Progress billing (AIA) and T&M billing
  • Change order tracking and reconciliation
  • Retainage and lien waiver management
  • Work-In-Progress (WIP) Reporting:
  • Preparation and maintenance of WIP schedules
  • Understanding over/under billings
  • QuickBooks Online (Advanced):
  • Daily hands-on use for job costing, invoicing, AP/AR, and reporting
  • Ability to maintain clean, audit-ready books
  • Financial Oversight:
  • Cash flow forecasting
  • Monthly close support
  • Coordination with CPA or external accounting firms
  • Project Documentation & Compliance:
  • Familiarity with submittals, RFIs, insurance certificates, W-9s, contracts, and compliance tracking
  • Ability to read and understand bids, scopes of work, and construction schedules
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Own project-level accounting for multiple active jobs
  • Prepare and submit project billings (AIA, progress billing, and T&M)
  • Track job costs, budgets, and cost-to-complete projections
  • Maintain accurate WIP reports and support monthly financial reviews
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, and job cost accounts
  • Support cash flow forecasting and financial planning
  • Assist with payroll reporting and certified payroll documentation
  • Prepare lien waivers, retainage tracking, and compliance documentation
  • Coordinate with ownership and CPA on monthly and year-end reporting

Office & Project Support

  • Set up and maintain job files (digital and physical)
  • Support project managers with financial reporting and job cost visibility
  • Communicate directly with GCs, vendors, inspectors, and internal field staff
  • Ensure financial and compliance documentation is accurate, complete, and timely

Preferred / Highly Valued Experience

  • Excavation, wet utilities, sewer, water, or civil construction background
  • Experience working for a subcontractor rather than only large commercial GCs
  • Certified payroll and labor compliance exposure
  • Experience managing financials for bonded or municipal projects
