What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Human Resources - Leader of People Strategy position at Haydon Holdings?
About Haydon Holdings
Haydon Holdings is a financially sound, growth-oriented family business now in its third generation. With three operating subsidiaries — Haydon Materials, Armag Corporation, and MM Lending — the company employs more than 200 team members across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. As Haydon prepares for its next chapter of leadership and growth, it is investing in the infrastructure necessary to scale with intention.
The Opportunity
This is a newly created strategic leadership role — not a traditional HR management position. As Director of Human Resources, you will have a seat at the leadership table, working directly with the CEO, CFO, and operating company presidents to build the people strategy, systems, and culture that will carry Haydon Holdings forward.
What You'll Do
People Strategy & Organizational Development
- Design and lead a people strategy aligned to the company's business objectives and growth plan
- Own succession planning and bench strength development across all operating entities
- Build a formal performance management system including goal-setting, feedback cadences, and accountability frameworks
- Lead organizational development initiatives in partnership with external consultants and senior leadership
Leadership & Manager Development
- Create a leadership competency model that defines expectations at every level of management
- Build and manage an ongoing middle manager development program with measurable outcomes
- Partner with operating company presidents to drive manager accountability for HR standards
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
- Establish and own a talent acquisition strategy across all entities, including oversight of external recruiter relationships
- Build workforce planning capability including headcount forecasting and succession gap analysis
- Ensure a consistent, professional candidate experience and onboarding process across all three companies
Compensation, Policy & Compliance
- Develop a formal compensation philosophy and structure with benchmarking, pay bands, and consistent pay decision frameworks
- Conduct a comprehensive review and update of HR policies across all entities
- Ensure compliance with FMLA, EEO/Affirmative Action, OSHA, and benefits administration requirements
Culture & Employee Experience
- Serve as a culture steward, helping the company scale its strengths while building the accountability its next chapter requires
- Champion employee engagement and position Haydon as an employer of choice in its markets
What We're Looking For
Required
- 7 years of progressive HR experience with demonstrated leadership in a multi-site or multi-entity environment
- Proven track record designing and implementing strategic HR programs — not just administering them
- Strong working knowledge of employment law, HR compliance, and best practices
- Experience building or significantly improving performance management and leadership development systems
- Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to drive change in a relationship-based culture
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Organizational Development, or related field
Preferred
- Experience in manufacturing, construction, financial services, or other operationally complex industries
- PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-SCP certification
- Experience working with or for a family-owned or closely held business
- Familiarity with Paycor or similar HRIS platforms
- Experience with organizational assessments and psychometric tools (e.g., PXT, CheckPoint 360)
Who Thrives in This Role
You're a builder, not just a manager. You're energized by creating structure where things have been informal and leading with both strategic vision and practical execution. You're direct without being hard, patient without being passive, and confident presenting a point of view to senior leadership while remaining genuinely open to input.
You understand that in a family-owned culture, trust is earned slowly and must be protected carefully. You don't rely on position authority — you influence through relationships, expertise, and consistency. You're as comfortable in a rural Kentucky plant as you are in a boardroom, and you bring the same standard of professionalism to both.
