Job Description
The Resident Engineer will serve as Hayat Brown’s on-site technical lead during the construction phase of transportation and civil infrastructure projects. This role will oversee construction activities, ensuring compliance with contract requirements and standards, monitoring progress and quality, and coordinating effectively with contractors, stakeholders, and internal teams. The Resident Engineer will serve as the primary field representative for the firm and its clients, ensuring projects are constructed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with engineering plans and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Construction Oversight
- Provide daily on-site oversight of construction activities
- Monitor contractor work for compliance with plans, specifications, and safety requirements
- Identify field issues and escalate as needed
Contract Administration Support
- Assist with review of:
- Pay applications and quantity tracking
- RFIs, submittals, and change orders
- Maintain construction documentation, logs, and reports
- Support compliance with DOT and FHWA requirements
Schedule & Progress Monitoring
- Review contractor schedules and progress updates
- Track construction progress and identify potential delays
- Assist with schedule and cost impact evaluations
Quality Assurance & Inspection
- Coordinate inspection and materials testing activities
- Verify workmanship and materials meet DOT standards
- Document deficiencies and verify corrective actions
Safety & Traffic Control
- Monitor compliance with OSHA, DOT, and MUTCD requirements
- Review and observe implementation of MOT and safety plans
- Report unsafe conditions promptly
Meetings & Reporting
- Participate in progress meetings and coordination meetings
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly construction reports
- Communicate field observations to senior staff and clients
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
- 7–10 years of experience in DOT transportation construction
- Experience in construction inspection and contract administration
- Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- DOT inspection or materials certifications
- Experience with CPM scheduling tools (Primavera P6 or MS Project)
- Familiarity with DOT construction management systems
- Experience using digital field reporting tools
Salary Range (DMV Area)
$120,000 – $140,000 annually, depending on experience and licensure
