Description Of Internship
HAWC provides a variety of services to individuals and families across the North Shore of MA who have experienced partner abuse. HAWC is seeking a legal intern (3:03 Certified Student Attorney) to assist the Managing Attorney with providing legal services, including consultations, document drafting, and, when possible, direct representation for survivors in 209A Abuse Prevention Orders, 258E Harassment Prevention Orders, and affirmative immigration petitions with USCIS.
Field
This internship is generally a good fit for a 2L or 3L law student who is eligible for SJC rule 3:03 certification and is interested in getting practical experience by representing indigent individuals in 209A and 258E civil proceedings in five local courts. The Student Attorney will have the opportunity to conduct client interviews, develop direct and cross examination, and craft opening and closing arguments in a civil legal proceeding, with direct supervision. The ideal candidate will have completed either a course in family law or immigration.
Responsibilities
This internship involves approximately 15 hours per week but can be flexible depending on the needs/requirements of the student. This is a hybrid position with some in person hours required either in the Salem or Lynn office or to attend court hearings.
A thirty-hour pre-service training must be completed prior to engagement with clients.
Supervision Available
The Managing Attorney supervises this position. There is one hour per week of individual supervision and additional supervision as needed for their academic requirements.

Responsibilities
- Provide support, crisis intervention, advocacy and information and referral services to victims of domestic violence in our community based offices and five local courts.
- Assist survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking in completing 209A Abuse Prevention Orders and 258E Harassment Prevention Order applications.
- Provide support to volunteer and staff attorneys during legal clinic consultations, including drafting motions, briefs, memorandums of law, and/or immigration applications for survivors in cases before local district courts, Essex County Probate and Family Court, and/or USCIS.
- With attorney supervision, represent indigent plaintiffs in 209A or 258E civil proceedings in local district courts in accordance with SJC rule 3:03.
- With attorney supervision, conduct client meetings, intakes, and consultations in accordance with SJC rule 3:03.
- Provide support to the legal team by assisting with administrative tasks, data entry, survey collection, court based data gathering, and projects.
- Advocate for public policy and legislative matters related to domestic and sexual violence, and stalking.
- Attend trainings and continuing education relative to the position.
- Adhere to HAWC guidelines and protocols to ensure client confidentiality.
- Attend regular supervision with the Managing Attorney.
- Bilingual candidates (Spanish or Portuguese) preferred, but not required.
- Completion or current enrollment in either a course of immigration law or family law.
- Obtained SJC Rule 3:03 Certification, or is eligible to apply for certification with this internship.
- Demonstrated interest in working with marginalized populations and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
- Demonstrated ability to engage in trauma informed legal advocacy.
