Position Overview:
The Hawbridge School, a Title I public charter school serving students in a creative, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating environment, is seeking a dynamic Second-Grade Teacher to join our Lower School team. We are seeking a passionate, creative, and student-centered Second Grade Teacher who is committed to nurturing the whole child through place-based learning, restorative practices, and culturally responsive teaching. The ideal candidate possesses in-depth knowledge of content, a collaborative spirit, and a conviction that learning should
be both joyful and rigorous, with a strong foundation in real-world connections.
Key Responsibilities:
Create a Safe, Inclusive, and Respectful Classroom
Build a nurturing environment where all children feel respected, seen, and supported. Use restorative practices to foster positive relationships, resolve conflict peacefully, and promote emotional growth.
Celebrate each child’s unique background and create space for all voices.
Embrace and Teach Through Diversity
Incorporate diverse perspectives into lessons and materials to ensure every student feels represented.
Encourage empathy, curiosity, and cultural understanding, while actively addressing bias and stereotypes.
Engage in Place-Based and Outdoor Learning
Design learning experiences that connect students to their local community and environment. Use the outdoors as a dynamic classroom, allowing for exploration, inquiry, and real-world problem-solving that fosters environmental stewardship and community awareness.
Foster Creativity Through the Arts and Play
Use art, music, movement, and imaginative play as core teaching tools. Support students in expressing themselves creatively while developing critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.
Know Your Content and Make it Meaningful
Deliver the North Carolina Standard Course of Study through rigorous, developmentally appropriate instruction for second grade. Build fluency in reading, writing, and math while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application across content areas.

Differentiate Instruction and Support Student Growth
Recognize that every child learns differently. Use formative and summative assessments, observation, and data to adapt instruction and ensure every student makes measurable academic and social progress.
Collaborate and Contribute to a Professional Learning Community
Work closely with colleagues, specialists, and families to support each child’s learning. Share strategies, participate in professional development, and contribute to a culture of continuous reflection and growth.
Model Ethical, Reflective, and Purpose-Driven Teaching
Uphold professional standards, model ethical behavior, and reflect regularly on teaching practices. Use data, feedback, and collaboration to improve instruction and ensure your impact leads to student success.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required; teaching license or certification in your specialty area preferred
Experience working with elementary-aged students in a school or enrichment setting
Strong classroom management and student engagement skills
A collaborative spirit and willingness to contribute to a close-knit school community
Passion for progressive education and student-centered learning
