Commercial Loan Underwriter II

Responsible for evaluating business loan applications for completeness, analyzing financial statements and other relevant information to determine the feasibility of extending credit to a prospective borrower and preparing credit presentations for appropriate approval in accordance with the credit union’s commercial loan policy, guidelines and procedures. Assist with the review and maintenance of the portfolio (i.e. expiring lines/ loans, annual loan reviews, risk grading issues) to help ensure the overall integrity of the business loan portfolio. 

Key Responsibilities - Commercial Loan Underwriter II and Senior Commercial Loan Underwriter

• Provide underwriting support for the Commercial Loan Department on various types of business lines/ loans (including but not limited to) commercial & industrial loans and commercial real estate loans, including but not limited to accurately preparing and analyzing financial spreads based on the borrower/ guarantor financial information (i.e. tax returns, financial statements); investigating trends to determine “why” something happened and provides specific evidence; and investigating any mitigating factors that could offset a downward trend (or other concerning situations), as well as prepare the Credit Request Authorization in an accurate and timely manner.
• Process scored business loans using Abrigo’s loan decisioning tool.
• Underwrite Annual Loan Reviews for required commercial loans.
• Assist in portfolio management, especially with regard to ticklers, including but not limited to generating tickler emails to Borrowers, properly filing tickler items that are received and satisfying tickler compliance.
• Accompany Loan Officer on joint calls to participate in loan structuring and to ascertain financial condition of the company being analyzed.
• Prepare supporting documentation for loans and presents at credit vetting sessions.
• Review and/ or assist in the preparation of departmental business loan reports as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Serve as primary underwriter for more complicated commercial industrial loans and complex credits.
• Assist Loan Officers with credit structuring decisions. Assure that credit structure meets borrower's needs while maintaining safety and soundness standards for the credit union.
• Represent the credit union in the community at trade fairs, networking, or other business development events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Commercial Underwriter II - Qualifications & Experience

• One to three years of commercial credit underwriting experience.
• Business bachelor's degree preferred.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Sr. Commercial Underwriter - Qualifications & Experience

• Five or more years of commercial credit underwriting experience preferred.
• Business bachelor's degree preferred.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Sitting for prolonged periods at a desk working on a computer and phone.
• Frequent prolonged meetings.
• Traveling to various branches on occasion.
• Reaching, bending, twisting, turning on occasion.

Benefits and Pay

The expected pay for this Commercial Loan Underwriter II is $58,352.15 to $71,250.14 per year.

The expected pay for this Sr. Commercial Underwriter is $72,765.16 to $91,000.00 per year.

This pay reflects the compensation we reasonably expect to offer for this role based on typical qualifications and market data. Offered pay may vary depending on the candidate’s experience, skills, and other relevant factors.
