What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legislative Attorney position at Hawaii State House of Representatives?
The House Minority Research Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Legislative Attorney in the Hawaii State House of Representatives. The position calls for legislative drafting, digesting, and advising the Republican Caucus on supporting or opposing legislation that is in the best interests of the citizens of Hawaii.
The ideal candidate will be a licensed lawyer with excellent communication skills. The position is full-time with health benefits and onsite parking.
Hawaii residents only.
Duties:
- Draft legislative bills, resolutions, floor amendments, memos and other communications.
- Identify issues, trends, and problems of significance through legislative, national and local government and media analysis.
- Advise Caucus members on the pros and cons of legislation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A graduate degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school, successful completion of the Hawaii Bar examination, and a license to practice law in the state and federal district court
- Strong research, writing, communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to explain specialized and technical concepts quickly to legislators.
- Ability to produce high-quality written material under tight deadlines.
- Ability to multitask and manage projects, maintain confidentiality, and write and communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
- Demonstrate familiarity with federal, state, and county laws, rules, organization, functions, operations, policies, programs, and procedures.
- Knowledge of legislative drafting techniques.
- Prior legislative experience or knowledge of parliamentary procedures.
- Basic understanding of Hawaii political and policy issues.
Salary: $95,000 per year
