Description

Washington Middle School is seeking a dedicated and dynamic educator for our Music and Media Production Program. This unique role requires a professional who seamlessly combines strong classroom instructional skills with hands-on expertise in audio production and media arts.

The selected educator will be expected to develop a robust, standards-based curriculum while providing middle school students with authentic studio experiences. The emphasis of this program is on engaging students in the creative process, cultivating technical skills, fostering collaboration, and building early career awareness in a safe, supportive, and structured environment.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered qualified for this position, applicants must explicitly demonstrate the following through their application materials and initial screening:

  • Curriculum & Instruction: Proven knowledge of curriculum design and the ability to develop and implement standards-based, project-based learning experiences.

  • Standards Alignment: Demonstrated experience aligning instruction with state standards, including Technology, Media Arts, Music, Career and Technical Education (CTE), Language Arts, or Digital Media standards.

  • Differentiation & Assessment: Ability to differentiate instruction for middle school students with varying skill levels and learning needs, alongside experience assessing student learning through portfolios, projects, performances, and presentations.

  • Technical Studio Expertise: Comprehensive ability to teach foundational studio skills, including:
    • Audio production fundamentals & music recording/production
    • Podcasting and broadcasting
    • Media literacy, copyright, fair use, and digital citizenship
    • Storytelling, scriptwriting, and interviewing techniques
  • Cross-Curricular & Industry Integration: Ability to integrate cross-curricular learning opportunities (Language Arts, Music, Tech, and Career Exploration) and a clear understanding of current industry practices and pathways in media production, broadcasting, and audio engineering.

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 5 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit. You may apply for your Hawaii teaching license on the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board Website (https://hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org/).

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
