JOB DUTIES : This position is regional and is located in the In-Service Education department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical care access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities.

The In-Service Education department plays a vital role in enhancing the professional development and competency of healthcare staff through structured training programs and educational initiatives. This department is responsible for assessing the educational needs of employees, designing and implementing relevant training sessions, and providing ongoing support to ensure that staff members are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills necessary for high-quality patient care. The department also facilitates orientation for new hires, promotes continuing education opportunities, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements. By fostering a culture of lifelong learning, the In-Service Education department contributes to improved clinical outcomes, patient safety, and overall organizational effectiveness.

This position serves as a regional clinical educator and Electronic Health Records (EHR) training specialist for the HHSC Kaua’i Region. The role provides system-wide EHR education, clinical workflow training, and new employee orientation for both CAH, outpatient clinics, and all clinical departments, including but not limited to Emergency Services, Med Surg, Surgery & Recovery Services, Obstetrics (OB), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and ancillary services. The position ensures staff competency, documentation quality, and regulatory compliance through structured training, competency validation, and ongoing workflow support. This position primarily operates at KVMH but requires travel between various facilities within the region as needed and may necessitate extended hours, including weekends and holidays, to fulfill operational requirements.

The RPN IV reports to the RPN V (Regional Inservice Education Nurse Manager), position number 20862, or their designee.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Graduation from a nursing program with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable. Relevant substitutions may be considered.

LICENSURE:

  • A current license to practice as a professional nurse (RN) in the State of Hawai’i.
  • A current State of Hawai’i motor vehicle operator's license (Type #3) is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • A current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) is required at the time of appointment.
  • Current certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by AHA; Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI); Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (IFM/AFM); Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs, and Emotional Support (STABLE) are highly recommended.
  • Applicants are required to be certified instructors in at least two (2) of the following programs within six (6) months of employment: BLS, ACLS, or PALS from the AHA; CPI; NRP; IFM or AFM; or Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS).

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

  • One and one-half years (1½) of professional nursing experience where the applicant independently provides nursing care to patients in a clinic, hospital, or institution.
  • Previous experience in teaching or training EMR systems in Cerner/Oracle; staff education or clinical orientation; with Cerner Powerchart, FirstNet, SurgiNet, FetaLink; clinical informatics or super-user roles is preferred.

SUPERVISORY APTITUDE: Applicants must demonstrate supervisory aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments that involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory or administrative capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

SELECT CERTIFICATION: Of the required one and one-half (1½) years of professional nursing experience, one and one-half (1½) years must be in an education department developing training and education programs and training employees on the use of electronic medical records (EMR) systems. This experience must be gained within the past two (2) years.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • KNOWLEDGE OF: nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing; JCAHO requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts; the principles and practices of supervision and demonstrated administrative aptitude.
  • ABILITY TO: apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of patients' conditions and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff, and employees; prepare comprehensive nursing diagnoses and nursing care plans; plan and direct the work of lower-level registered nurses and nursing assistants; plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision; initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing, and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital; teach complex workflows in a clear, structured, and engaging manner; communicate effectively with individuals at all levels; conduct needs assessments and develop individualized and group training programs; evaluate training effectiveness and adjust content accordingly; work independently, manage multiple priorities, and support all shifts; operate audio-visual equipment; work as a team member; apply management, leadership, decision-making, interpersonal, and communication skills.
