JOB DUTIES: This position is regional and is located in the Maintenance department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities.
The Maintenance department provides technical expertise in the design, planning, and construction of building projects, ensuring the facility's physical plant and equipment meet operational needs. Responsibilities include maintaining buildings and equipment, conducting repairs, ensuring proper electrical and utility services, maintaining grounds and landscaping, operating boilers, conducting fire inspections, and upholding a clean and sanitary facility.
The primary function of this position is to serve as the Regional Facilities Director (RFD). In this role, the RFD administers all programs for the Kaua’i Region of HHSC related to environmental services, construction, facilities management, land beautification, telecommunications maintenance, capital improvements, permit acquisition, and the development of policies and procedures to meet environmental needs. The RFD also coordinates major bids for equipment and construction for both facilities in the Kaua’i Region. This position acts as the chief advisor to the Regional Chief Operations Officer (RCOO). It supervises staff by monitoring adherence to sound facilities management principles, ensuring compliance with regulations, and exercising authority for approvals and disapprovals. Responsibilities include verifying that all standards and requirements set by Federal, State, and private accrediting bodies—such as Medicare/Medicaid, ADA, Joint Commission, and OSHA—are consistently met.
This position requires travel to all facilities within the HHSC Kaua’i Region and may necessitate extended hours, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
The position operates under general administrative direction aligned with current objectives and reports directly to the RCOO, position number 109911, or their designee. Additionally, it receives guidance from the RCOO regarding site-specific concerns.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree, or a minimum of ten (10) years of management experience in general building maintenance, construction, and environmental services in a healthcare setting. Relevant substitutions allowed.
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of professional specialized experience in one or more of the following areas: 1) Professional, technical, or administrative work requiring effective interaction with coworkers, business contracts, or the public; 2) maintenance and repair of buildings or utilities, including preparation and interpretation of plans and safety measures; 3) procurement protocols as outlined by Hawai'i Revised Statutues for construction and equipment purchases;ANDA minimum of three (3) years of professional supervisory experience, with at least two (2) years at the middle management level in a multi-building facility's construction or maintenance department.
CERTIFICATION:None required.
LICENSURE:Possession of a State of Hawai'i type #3 driver's license is preferred.
DESIRED SKILLS:
Knowledge of: construction contracts and engineering in a healthcare facility, along with overall management skills; common tradesman tools and equipment, grounds keeping tools and equipment, and common housekeeping and laundry equipment.Ability to: lead and motivate a diverse team, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment; oversee multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating resources and timelines to ensure successful completion.
