Position Summary
Support the Campus Store Manager in leading daily operations and delivering strong sales, service, people, merchandising, and inventory results. This role serves as Manager-on-Duty and may own one or more departments or operating functions based on store needs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Act as Manager-on-Duty and provide direction, coaching, and issue resolution when the Store Manager is unavailable.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, scheduling, training, performance follow-up, and employee engagement.
- Assign daily work and ensure priorities are completed accurately and on time.
Campus Customer Experience
- Maintain a visible floor presence and provide informed service across the store’s product and service offerings.
- Help the team serve the distinct needs of the Harvard or MIT campus community connected to the assigned store.
- Support The COOP membership experience and school- or store-specific programs, discounts, tenders, and events.
Operations & Results
- Support sales goals, labor management, cash controls, inventory accuracy, store technology, safety, and loss prevention.
- Own assigned departments or functions, including replenishment, merchandising, receiving, trade books, visual execution, or operations.
- Assist with peak-period planning for orientation, commencement, reunions, campus events, and seasonal demand
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- 3 years of retail experience preferred; at least 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in collegiate, bookstore, specialty, or multi-category retail preferred.
- Strong customer service, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and lead the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and peak academic periods.
Physical Demands and Requirements
- Ability to remain standing and move throughout the store for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently communicate with customers, team members, and business partners.
- Ability to operate point-of-sale, inventory, and other retail technology systems.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move merchandise and supplies up to 50 pounds and use ladders safely.
