Hastings Insurance is currently looking for an Accountant to join its Financial Services team! The individual in this role will prepare, review, analyze, and maintain financial data and records ensuring that all are reported in accordance with statutory and GAAP accounting principles and management guidelines for the company and its charitable foundation.
Position Location & Schedule Details
This is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position, typically working Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Employees must be able to work at our Hastings, MI corporate headquarters, in a hybrid capacity consisting of weekly in-office and remote (from home) based work.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
Prepares, reviews, analyzes, and maintains, timely and accurately, financial data in accordance with statutory accounting principles and management guidelines in the areas of premiums, investments, fixed assets, reinsurance, losses, expenses, and state and federal taxes.
Prepares and posts journal entries and verifies the accuracy of the general ledger to source documents. An independent accounting firm, the State of Michigan, the Internal Revenue Service, rating agencies, and internal personnel also audit the general ledger accounts.
Researches, prepares, and analyzes control reports for use by management in explaining the financial condition of the Company to the Board of Directors, policyholders and other interested parties.
Prepares financial highlights and electronic financial presentations for the Board of Director meetings.
Researches, prepares, and files all necessary National Association of Insurance Companies (NAIC), city, state, and federal reports to comply with laws and regulations.
Manages cash to maximize invested funds and profitability. Timely transfers and accurate calculations are essential to this function.
Prepares documentation and supports corporate planning, Weiss Ratings, AM Best rating, and Management’s Discussion and Analysis.
Responsible for controls and identifying, analyzing, and presenting information to management of unusual financial activity, account variances, and unethical behavior.
Researches and prepares the statutory premium assessment.
Performs various industry-wide comparisons of financial data.
Participates in Accounting and Company-related projects.
These may be assigned by the Accounting Manager, or senior management or initiated from personal experience.
Includes participation in corporate planning and working with project managers to forecast and track expenses and cash flows and analyze plan-to-actual variances.
Collaborates and verifies a variety of financial information from internal and external sources.
Provides training and technical assistance to Company personnel as needed.
Keeps historical accounting records organized, ensuring that all information is available on short notice and meets the established retention schedule.
Adheres to assigned diary deadlines and maintains assigned electronic documents.
Reviews and signs off on monthly reconciliations of Accounts Payable and Accountant staff members.
Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field is required, however equivalent experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
Statutory insurance accounting experience is highly preferred.
Demonstrated mathematical aptitude and calculator skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated PC skills including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
