Keiki Program Instructor & Water-Activity Safety Attendant

JOB SUMMARY: This dual-role position combines the duties of a Water-Activity Safety Attendant with

the responsibilities of an instructor for our various keiki programs. Candidates must have strong water

safety experience, demonstrated ability to engage and teach youth, and the flexibility to perform both

operational and instructional tasks. Candidates must have enthusiasm for learning and love working

with kids.

Nā ʻŌpio Kai is our signature youth-focused ocean sports program at The LineUp at Wai Kai. In addition

to supporting general lagoon and wave safety operations, this team member will lead instructional

experiences for keiki ages 8–13 in Learn to Surf, Learn to Sail, and Learn to Paddle lesson adventures.

Keiki Kai is an infant-parent inclusive program on the Waterfront. Aged for kids, 0-3 years old, the layout

of the program is focused on water sensory, color recognition, story time, song and dance activities. This

program is an hour long, with a 30-minute instruction course with free play at the beginning and end.

This is a weekly recurring program on Monday, Thursday, and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m.

Keiki ʻĀina is a toddler program, ages 4-6 years old. This course follows an hour-long program, with a 30-

minute structured class and free play to support keiki in body awareness, movement, and hand-eye

coordination. This is a weekly recurring program on Saturdays at 8:00 a.m.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Keiki Program Instruction

• Facilitate youth programs including dry land safety education and on-water skill development.
• Instruct basic paddling, sailing, and surfing techniques, promoting safety, fun, and confidence.
• Must be comfortable incorporating story time, dance and song in program with enthusiasm.
• Integrate cultural knowledge and waterman lifestyle values into programming.
• Maintain a positive and engaging learning environment tailored to the needs of youth.
• Communicate efficiently with parents and cross-departmental needs

Guest Interaction & Safety

• Greet guests warmly and provide clear, friendly safety briefings.
• Assist with equipment rentals (surfboards, paddleboards, kayaks) and ensure proper use.
• Supervise the Wai Kai Lagoon and Wave Pool to promote safety and enforce rules.
• Respond to emergencies, administer first aid, and activate emergency protocols.

Operations & Maintenance

• Open and close activity areas, clean and prep equipment, and ensure readiness.
• Perform light maintenance, including equipment cleaning, housekeeping and minor repairs.
• Secure all items and complete end-of-day procedures.

Team Collaboration

• Work cross-functionally with staff and instructors to deliver seamless guest and program

experiences.

• Assist with special events or races as assigned.

Reporting & Compliance

• Maintain detailed incidents and safety reports.
• Ensure adherence to company policies, including safety and risk management protocols.
• Must complete Child Abuse Safety policy training

General Responsibilities

• Carry out all other duties assigned by management to support the overall success of Recreation

and Leisure Activities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Skills & Attributes

• Strong swimming ability and confidence in open deep-water settings.
• Experience teaching or mentoring youth, preferably ages 0–13.
• Excellent communication and group management skills.
• Positive, calm, and professional demeanor under pressure.
• Ability to adapt between structured youth instruction and general guest service duties.
• Experience integrating Native Hawaiian cultural perspectives into programming, education, or

community engagement preferred.

Certifications & Training:

• Must pass a criminal background check due to interaction with minors.
• Star Guard Lifeguard and CPR/AED-BL First Aid Certification required (training provided).
• Hawaii Boaters Safety Certification required (training provided).
• Child Abuse Safety Policy completion (training provided).

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to swim 550 yards, dive at least 10 feet, and tread water for 2 minutes.
• Capable of lifting 50 lbs. and assisting guests in and out of the water.
• Frequent bending, twisting, standing, and squatting required.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience:

o Teaching experience with youth (in schools, camps, sports, or community programs) is

required.

o Previous experience in water safety, recreation, or related fields preferred.

o Background in customer service or ocean sports (e.g., kayaking, surfing, stand-up

paddling) is highly desirable.
