Job description

Title: Student Assistance Professional (SAP), full-time school year position

Job Summary:  The SAP has primary responsibility for screening and referrals for students identified with mental health and substance use disorders, as well as providing substance abuse prevention education to students and staff.

Reports to:   Magge Stone & Jen Dreimiller, and a licensed clinical supervisor  (Debbie Haskins) on a monthly basis (clinical supervision) 

Responsibilities:

• Establish safe and supportive relationships with students and maintain a consistent presence in the school.
• Attend required training regarding substance abuse prevention and use of substance use screening tools.
• Provide intervention and screening to students identified as having mental health or substance abuse issues. 
• Collaborate with students on prevention initiatives,leadership groups and substance abuse advocacy including leading field trips.
• Collaborate and maintain relationships with appropriate outside agencies.
• Make effective internal and external referrals for students with mental health or substance abuse issues for more specialized or intensive services as needed.
• Provide case management to students going to and returning from treatment.
• Meet with concerned families and work with students and their parents/guardians where services are needed.
• Plan and facilitate substance abuse prevention education for HUHMS students.
• Plan and facilitate substance abuse prevention education for caregivers. 
• Plan and facilitate student support groups, related to substance use, decision-making, and peer pressure with a focus on skill development. (Foster risk reduction and positive asset development).
• Continues to be involved in writing and updating the substance misuse policy and helps facilitate the procedures.
• Work with health educators, school counselors, administration, and nurses to implement evidence based prevention curriculum. 

• Participate as part of the MTSS team on an as-needed basis.
• Serve as a resource to school staff regarding substance use, abuse and prevention.
• Attend supervision with a licensed clinician (frequency TBD).
• Maintain records and statistics for school and district as directed.
• Attend professional training and functions. 
• Adhere to federal regulations encoded in Title 42 CFR relative to confidentiality regulations for drug and alcohol counselors.  In compliance with both 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA, the SAP will disclose information to the SAP’s supervisor and school principal when the SAP has concerns about a student’s safety or willingness to participate in recommended programs relative to that student’s safety.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or commensurate experience preferred.
• At least three years of experience in a school support staff position or a related position.
• Experience in youth substance abuse prevention education and/or counseling preferred.

Salary : $24,600 - $49,200
