Job Summary:

The Subsurface Director deploys the vision and strategy of HLCP Carbon Capture and Storage by providing leadership on all subsurface activities. Helps develop subsurface plans for individual projects and leads the team of external scientists and engineers to ensure that an appropriate level of resources is applied to the plans. Directs day-to-day activities of consultants, contractors, scientists and engineers supporting subsurface CO2 sequestration activities. These activities include oversight of CO2 storage site selection and characterization, compliant Class VI well design, oversight of seismic studies, management for construction and commissioning of Class VI wells and ancillary facilities, and design and implementation of long-term monitoring programs as well as operational oversight of these assets once in service. This position is responsible for providing in-house expertise when determining the technical and economic feasibility of sequestration data collection activities and leading execution of all subsurface activities.

Major Responsibilities:

• Provides internal expertise in Seismic Surveys, Geological Evaluations, Well Design and Permitting, Well Drilling and Workover, Pipeline Design and Installations
• Prepares tender documents and strategy documents for third services, evaluates bids and prepares recommendations for contract awards
• Manages and leads engineers, geologists, contractors, and consultants in the execution of subsurface sequestration development, operations, and maintenance
• Communicates with high level of expertise in areas of geoscience, reservoir engineering, well design, project economics and GIS
• Identifies key reservoir engineering drivers and issues associated with opportunities under evaluation of projects already in service
• Participates and leads efforts in the development of best practice subsurface evaluation and operational methods
• Regularly communicates with management regarding project status, goals and objectives
• Prepares notices and responses required by regulatory agencies
• Works closely with project team to execute data gathering, testing, and logging plans for stratigraphic, injection, and monitoring wells
• Provides guidance for injection operations, maintenance and monitoring
• Plans and leads all fieldwork for ongoing Class VI operations to maintain 100% compliance
• Maintains a high regard for personal safety, the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.

Key Skills and Competencies:

• Prior exposure to exploration, production, and/or underground storage operations
• Knowledge of well construction and well maintenance including drilling completion and workovers
• Experience with prospective CO2 reservoir characterization and monitoring, such as: Core analysis, geophysical analysis, geochemical characterization of saline aquifers, sealing formations, and protection of underground sources of drinking water
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Problem solving mindset with emphasis on ethical and sustainable solutions and business development opportunities
• Strong regulatory compliance acumen and accountability
• Knowledge of renewable and low carbon fuel programs
• Ability to build relationships, establish credibility and influence all levels of the organization
• Ability to work with and maintain confidential information
• Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel and SharePoint.
• Ability to create a team environment and create an environment of open dialog and continuous improvement with employees
• Ability to analyze, research, organize and interpret data; possess attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to plan, organize, prioritize time/workload to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in geology, engineering or related field plus a minimum of seven years progressive professional oil and gas/pipeline exploration and/or development experience and/or carbon capture storage or related operational experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Must have a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in geology, geophysics, engineering or related field
• Oil and gas industry with CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) experience
• Experience with Class VI Injection Well projects
