A school custodian ensures a safe, sanitary, and functional environment for students and staff by cleaning classrooms, restrooms, and common areas, managing waste, and performing minor repairs. Responsibilities include daily sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting surfaces, and managing building security (locking doors).
Key Responsibilities
- Cleaning & Sanitation: Daily cleaning of restrooms, classrooms, cafeteria, and offices. This includes mopping, stripping/buffing floors, cleaning chalkboards, and cleaning spills.
- Safety & Security: Locking doors, securing buildings, and checking windows. Ensuring cleaning chemicals are properly used and stored.
- Grounds Upkeep: Assisting with exterior cleaning, such as sweeping entrances, removing trash, etc.
- Event Support: Setting up and breaking down furniture for assemblies, lunches, or evening events.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Physical Stamina: Significant walking, bending, kneeling, and standing for long periods.
- Lifting: Frequently lifting and moving furniture or heavy equipment.
- Environment: Indoors and outdoors, with potential exposure to cleaning chemicals and heavy noise.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- High school graduate preferred
Working Environment
- Needs to be able to talk and interact with administrators, school staff and students in a manner that is a positive reflection of the goals of the school
- Retirement is through the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Texas and not Social Security (TRS requires five years of participation before any retirement funds are vested. )
