Upper School Learning Specialist

Role Overview

Harvard-Westlake School seeks an Upper School Academic Support Specialist to join the Learning Center for the 2026–27 school year. This full-time position, beginning in August 2026, supports students in grades 10–12 in cultivating effective learning habits, strengthening academic skills, and fostering independence within a rigorous college-preparatory environment.

The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of learning differences, current and accepted brain research and methodologies, and evidence-based academic interventions. They are skilled in supporting students across the writing process and demonstrate cultural competency in their work with students, families, faculty, and other stakeholders.

About the Learning Center

The Learning Center supports students with a wide range of learning profiles and works collaboratively with faculty, counselors, deans, and families to promote academic growth, self-advocacy, and independence. Members of the Learning Center team play a vital role in helping students build skills, confidence, and strategies that allow them to thrive in Harvard-Westlake’s academically demanding environment.

Responsibilities

Areas of focus include, but are not limited to:

• Supporting a targeted caseload of students, with an emphasis on academic skill development and individualized learning strategies
• Meeting one-on-one with students to strengthen executive functioning skills, including planning, organization, work completion, communication, and self-advocacy
• Serving as a liaison between the Learning Center and the English Department, particularly in supporting students through the writing process
• Designing and leading workshops for students on topics such as study skills, executive functioning, time management, and subject-specific academic strategies
• Collaborating closely with faculty and administrators to advocate for students and partner with families around learning differences and individualized academic needs
• Working with teachers to support differentiated instruction and foster a student-centered learning environment aligned with Harvard-Westlake’s academic standards

• High standards of confidentiality when handling sensitive student and family information

Education and Experience

Required:

• Master’s degree in education, Board Certified Educational Therapist credential, valid teaching credential (mild/moderate disabilities), or related professional experience
• Minimum of three years’ experience teaching or supporting students with diagnosed learning differences, or serving as a learning specialist with students in grades 10–12
• Strong understanding of evidence-based instructional practices that promote student independence, organization, and academic success
• Ability to read and synthesize neuropsychological evaluations, Section 504 plans, and Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), and to develop formal education plans based on accommodations offered by Harvard-Westlake
• Experience collaborating with faculty, administrators, and families to implement individualized learning plans

Preferred:

• Familiarity with assistive technologies, neuroscience research, and differentiated instructional strategies

About Harvard-Westlake

Harvard-Westlake is an independent school with two campuses in Los Angeles and approximately 1,600 students enrolled in grades 7–12. Classes for grades 7–9 take place on the Middle School campus in the Holmby Hills neighborhood, while grades 10–12 are housed on the Upper School campus in Studio City. A third campus, River Park, focused on athletics and recreation, is scheduled to open in Fall 2026.

Compensation

Anticipated base compensation for this position is $85,000–$105,000, depending on experience.

Schedule

Typically Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional events as needed.
