Job Description


Job Summary:


The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is seeking an energetic and organized individual for the position of statistical programmer to support a portfolio of multidisciplinary health policy and health services research projects. Our research team is seeking a programmer who can work effectively with Medicare and Medicaid administrative claims data, among other large databases of health care claims and assessments.

Project topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding the impact of Medicaid Managed Care adoption on a range of medical and long-term services and supports outcomes
  • Identifying populations who likely qualify for exemptions to forthcoming Medicaid work requirements in claims data
  • Assessing the impact of the COVID-19 public health emergency on a range of medical and long-term services and supports outcomes, including evaluating the degree to which different state policy choices have served as a mediating factor exacerbating or mitigating harms from COVID-19
  • Understanding the role that Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services expansion has on Medicaid and Medicare costs and quality measures
  • Developing predictive analytic models to identify people with disabilities and older adults likely to use long-term services and supports (LTSS) or transition between different LTSS settings
  • Develop and implement models for measuring health disparities experienced by people with disabilities across the health care system

This is an ideal position for a candidate seeking to gain research experience prior to pursuing further graduate education, including medical school or PhD programs. In addition to the research aims described above, a key aspect of the HPM mission is to train the next generation of health policy and health system leaders. To this end, HPM faculty are enthusiastic about providing opportunities for mentorship and professional growth that align with the successful candidate's long-term goals.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:


The successful candidate will work closely with faculty and research team members on a wide range of project-related tasks. These duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Organizes, maintains and manages data used in large research studies from multiple sources
  • Designs analytical databases and maintaining the integrity of the databases, including merging of multiple data sets and data manipulation to perform statistical analysis
  • Manages large data sets involving multiple years of data
  • Interaction with remote consultants or team members
  • Provides statistical analyses for multiple projects including multiple logistic and linear regression, quasi-experimental methods, longitudinal analysis, hierarchical models, and survey analysis
  • Development of scientific reports and presentations
  • Gives guidance to, and collaborates with faculty members and statisticians on analytical objectives
  • Other duties as assigned

PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of 1 year from date of hire with the possibility of extension.

Qualifications


Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Experience with STATA and R required

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree in Statistics/Biostatistics preferred, with 1-3 years working experience
  • Strong database management and computer skills
  • Advanced skills/experience in statistical programming and data management
  • Knowledge of statistical research methodology/principles
  • Knowledge of Python and Databricks
  • Summarizes/interprets complex analyses and strong deductive reasoning skills
  • Maintains detailed documentation of data management and programming work
  • Comfortable working with multiple PIs and multiple projects at the same time

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
