What are the responsibilities and job description for the Harvard Medical Physics Resident position at Harvard Medical School?
We are inviting applications for the Harvard Medical Physics Residency Program in Radiation Oncology Physics for the academic year beginning 7/1/2027. This is a CAMPEP-accredited therapy physics program and is jointly administered by the Departments of Radiation Oncology of the Harvard Medical School teaching affiliates: Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Our residency is structured as a three-year training program which includes an initial year primarily focused on a research project, followed by two years of clinical training. We accept two residents per year. Our program is intended for candidates with doctoral degrees in medical physics, physics, and related physical sciences or engineering who are interested in careers as therapeutic medical physicists in radiation oncology. The program provides both research and hands-on clinical training in all aspects of radiation oncology physics. Clinical training takes place on a rotating basis among the academic medical centers as well as affiliated community-based hospitals.
The residency program includes a full CAMPEP-accredited Certificate Program, which allows the core medical physics courses to be completed during the residency for residents who have not completed a CAMPEP certificate or degree. Further information on the CAMPEP course requirements is available at campep.org/ProspectiveApplicants.asp.
Our program participates in the MedPhys Match (www.natmatch.com/medphys/), and candidates must register for the Match and apply through the MedPhys Match Application portal. To be considered complete, applications must contain a cover letter, CV, at least two references, and all transcripts, including undergraduate, graduate, and, if applicable, certificate. The application deadline for our program is 12/1/2026. Inquiries can be sent to hmsmedphys@partners.org.
Please visit our website for further information regarding the entrance requirements for our program: harvardmedphys.org. Select candidates will be invited to participate in an initial round of remote videoconference interviews in December. Finalists will be invited to a remote interview on January 28th or 29th, 2027.
Facilities and Equipment:
Successful applicants will be appointed at Harvard Medical School and Harvard University. Residents are mentored and supervised in research and clinical training by a wide variety of experts in the field, including faculty members, clinical physicists, physicians, dosimetrists, therapists, and engineers. Our training resources include an extensive array of equipment and facilities: state-of-the-art linear accelerators for IMRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT, and IGRT, two proton facilities, MR-linac, two Ethos adaptive therapy machines, dedicated stereotactic facilities, Cyberknife, dedicated image-guided brachytherapy facilities, IORT, 4D-CT, and MRI simulation and imaging facilities.
Employer and Environment:
The Harvard Medical Physics Residency Program is supported by the Harvard Medical School affiliated radiation oncology departments in the Boston area: Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. There are additional academic resources available for further support and collaboration within the Boston vicinity as well as in other locations across the country and internationally.
