Purpose and Principle Responsibilities
The Stress Engineer provides technical support across all product lines within Hartwell by performing stress analyses and preparing stress analysis reports.  The Stress Engineer supports the design and development of systems and products to meet customer specifications, and assists in the resolution of difficult technical problems, either with new products or legacy products.

Experience
  1. 7 years of hands-on product development experience with a focus in mechanical design and analysis.
  2. Experience with the stress analysis of mechanism designs is desired.
  3. A proven track record in an engineering new product development team environment.
  4. Demonstrated experience of classical stress analysis of metallic components/assemblies using hand calculations.
  5. Experience with stress analysis related aerospace and industry specifications/standards, such as Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) and MIL-HDBK-5, is required.
  6. Experience with industry-standard stress analysis references, such as Bruhn’s Analysis and Design of Flight Vehicle Structures and Roark’s Formulas for Stress and Strain, is required.
Experience with FEA-based analysis is required.
Education
Must have a BS in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.  Alternate degrees will be considered.  An advanced engineering degree is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Must have demonstrated in-depth professional knowledge of engineering principles.
  2. Must have in-depth knowledge of linear and non-linear stress analysis.
  3. Must be highly proficient with linear and non-linear finite element stress analysis.
  4. Extensive problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills are essential.
  5. Must be highly self-motivated, results oriented, able to work without supervision, and be a committed team player.
  6. Must have a high level of comprehension and numerical intelligence (analytical).
  7. Must be very detail oriented with solid organizational skills.
  8. Must be able to communicate at a high level in both the written form and verbally.
  9. Must have superior computer skills, including experience with MS Office products, SolidWorks 3D CAD/CAE, and Mathcad.
  10. Must be highly self-motivated, results oriented, able to work without supervision, able to manage multiple projects, and produce consistent, accurate, and timely work.
  11. Extensive knowledge of metallic materials is essential.
  12. Knowledge of the aerospace industry and manufacturing methods and processes is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Perform stress analyses of assemblies and components in support of new product development.
  2. Perform stress analyses of assemblies and components in support of design changes resulting from sustaining engineering activities on legacy products.
  3. Prepare detailed, accurate, comprehensive stress analysis reports.
  4. Support the new product development teams in stress analysis related technical discussions with customers.
  5. Assist in the technical growth of the members of the engineering department by using such tools as mentoring and formal and informal training, and be an active participant in the development and dissemination of lessons learned in the area of stress analysis.
  6. Provide stress analysis related technical guidance and assistance to the members of the engineering department in the resolution of difficult technical problems.
  7. Assist the product development teams in the planning, organizing, and scheduling of stress analysis related activities during new product development.
  8. Assist in the identification and/or development of improved, state-of-the-art stress analysis techniques and processes that can improve Hartwell products and the product development processes.  This includes investigating external resources, processes, and products.
  9. Participate in activities to enhance the engineering department efficiency and productivity with a focus on improving product development speed and overall time to market to build a reputation as a value added partner.
Other special projects and duties as assigned.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  1. The Stress Engineer works the majority of the day in a climate controlled office environment, with the exception of or otherwise specified.
  2. The Stress Engineer role is primarily a sedentary office position.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.  Specific vision abilities required by the position may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Finger/hand dexterity is required to operate computers.
Travel is rarely required.  May be required to carry land luggage (60-lb. weight) for extended distances (1/2 mile).

Salary : $110,000 - $160,000
