Position Description:The Executive Director serves as HCC's chief executive and organizational leader, responsible for advancing the mission while ensuring strong programs, sustainable finances, effective operations, engaged staff and Board leadership, and meaningful community partnerships.

The ideal candidate is a relationship-builder and strategic thinker who can move comfortably between big-picture planning and hands-on nonprofit management. This person will work closely with staff, the Board, youth, families, funders, schools, community organizations, and municipal partners to strengthen HCC's prevention impact and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Program Leadership (25%)

  • Develop and implement annual priorities and prevention work plans informed by community data, youth and family input, staff expertise, and partner feedback.
  • Oversee delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of HCC's prevention programs.
  • Use participation and outcome data to guide program decisions and resource allocation.
  • Lead development and implementation of HCC's next strategic plan.
  • Financial & Resource Development
  • Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Board.
  • Ensure grants, contracts, reporting, and compliance requirements are completed accurately and on time.
  • Develop and implement a diversified fundraising and resource development strategy.
  • Cultivate relationships with funders, donors, sponsors, and community partners.

Community Leadership and Partnership (25%)

  • Serve as a visible and trusted ambassador for HCC throughout Hartford and the Upper Valley.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with schools, youth-serving organizations, municipal partners, nonprofits, businesses, funders, and other community stakeholders.
  • Increase youth and family engagement and promote meaningful participation from underrepresented voices.
  • Identify opportunities for collaborative programming and shared community impact

Staff and Board Leadership (10%)

  • Supervise, support, and develop HCC staff while fostering a collaborative, accountable, and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors.
  • Provide timely information and recommendations to support effective Board governance and decision-making.
  • Support Board recruitment, development, and succession planning.

Organizational Management (15%)

  • Maintain effective systems for financial management, grant administration, data collection, evaluation, documentation, and organizational compliance.
  • Strengthen policies and procedures that support continuity and reduce reliance on institutional knowledge held by any one individual.
  • Identify organizational risks, capacity needs, and opportunities for growth.

Program Implementation (25%)

  • Implementation of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) and Community Strategies for Change, including coordinating prevention initiatives, tracking progress and outcomes, and communicating updates and accomplishments to coalition members, partners, the Board, and the broader community.
  • Ensure program implementation is organized, responsive, and aligned with HCC's prevention priorities, funding requirements, and community needs
  • Provide seasonal management and oversight of HCC's Take a Bite Out of Hunger (TABOOH) Summer Meals Program, including USDA applications and compliance, reimbursable meal claims, program documentation, and coordination with community partners.
  • Maintain strong partner relationships and coordinate logistics for the distribution of summer meals across more than 28 community sites from June through August.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience in nonprofit leadership, program management, community leadership, youth development, prevention, public health, human services, education, or a related field.
  • Experience managing budgets, grants, or other organizational resources.
  • Strong relationship-building, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse community stakeholders.
  • Commitment to youth and family well-being, prevention, equity, inclusion, and community resilience.

Preferred:

  • Experience with nonprofit fundraising and resource development.
  • Experience with Board governance and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of substance use prevention, mental health promotion, or community prevention models.
  • Familiarity with the Hartford/Upper Valley community.
  • Success building trust in a small, relationship-driven community.
  • Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or related credential.
